Harrison Ford has cut down presidential hopeful Donald Trump after he praised the actor's terrorist battling character in Air Force One for 'standing up for America'.

While promoting the forthcoming Star Wars film, he made light of Trump's praise, saying: 'Donald, it was just a movie.'

It is not the first time Trump, who leads the race to become the Republican's presidential candidate, has been rebuffed by a celebrity he admitted to admiring.

Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey said she would not trust the reality TV star to run the country after Trump publicly claimed two months ago: 'She likes me.'

And this month, the real estate tycoon told of how he admired Ford for his role as tough guy President James Marshall in action film Air Force One.

Trump previously hailed Ford's role as President James Marshall as his 'favorite' movie character, adding 'he stood up for America'

In the film, Ford's character recaptures the presidential plane from a group of Kazakh terrorists who have taken the aircraft and his family hostage.

In an interview with the New York Post, Trump picked out the character of Marshall and his no nonsense approach to America's enemies as an inspiration.

He said: 'My favorite was Harrison Ford on the plane. I love Harrison Ford - and not just because he rents my properties. He stood up for America.'

When Studio 10 host Angela Bishop told Ford of Trump's compliment, he shot back: 'It was a movie' - before turning to stare directly down the camera.

With a smile teasing at the corner of his mouth, he repeated: 'Donald, it was a movie. It's not like this in real life.

'But, how would you know?'

Trump has repeatedly tried to portray himself as a force to be reckoned with when it comes to tackling terror threats including ISIS, following the Paris and San Bernardino terror attacks.

Speaking to supporters in Knoxville, Tennessee, Trump said he would 'bomb the s*** out of' the terror group, and has since advocated banning all Muslims from coming to the U.S. because

Earlier in the same interview, Ford had feigned ignorance when told of Trump's ambitions to succeed Barack Obama as President of the United States.

While the President is told to flee the aircraft, he actually feigns escaping before taking down the terrorists one by one - culminating in the famous line 'get off my plane!'

'The beloved Donald Trump, running for resident of the United States?' Ford asked, before being corrected that Trump is actually running for President.

'Oh, President? I though it was resident...' he added, to laughter from the crew. 'So he's not only going to live there he's going to run the show?'

When Bishop confirms that is indeed what Trump is planning, Ford quips: 'Oh, that's... not so much... no, I don't think so.'
