Mason Noise fails to appear on The X Factor final along with other contestants... as he makes a sly dig at Liam Payne in Instagram post calling him a 'backing singer'

His time as a contestant on the X Factor was littered with controversy.

And Mason Noise is still causing a stir, after he shunned the finalists' collaboration on Sunday night's final show before posting an antagonistic jibe about One Direction on Instagram.

The finalists from The X Factor lives shows performed the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis hit Downtown on the Wembley Arena stage, with one notable exception: series badboy Mason.

Instead, the 22-year-old took to Twitter to post a cryptic tweet. He wrote: 'I stand for what I believe in #AWE.'

And then the singer posted a snap of him and Liam Payne from earlier in the series on Instagram with the caption: 'One of the highlights of my experience, meeting one of Harry Styles backing singers @onedirection #XfactorFinal #onedirection'

Live show favourites 4th Impact, Lauren Murray and Seann Miley-Moore all returned to perform the upbeat track, which had the arena bouncing as the contestants took it in turns to sing lines from the retro-tinged song.

Mason is due to appear in next year's X Factor arena tour, although it is not yet known if his latest comments have jeopardised his place on the bill.

The MailOnline has contacted an X Factor representative for comment.

It was during the series' Six Chair Challenge that Mason had his now infamous diva moment.

Despite giving an impressive performance, he shot himself in the foot with his monumental ego.

Rather than let his mentor Nick Grimshaw make a decision about his place in the show, he instead complained about his lack of screen time.

'Yo, hold on - I've got something to say,' he says. 'You know what, I invite you all to film this - put up your phones. They ain't going to throw 5,000 people out.'

Angering the panel, Simon snaps back: 'What gives you the right to say that?'

I'll go for it straight,' Mason replies. 'The first auditions - I watched on Saturday. People had ten minute slots and I went to 47 seconds.'

Clearly not moved, Simon continues to fight back, saying: 'Why don't you shut up? Dont tell me how long you should have on this show.

'You are five seconds away from getting thrown off this stage...If you've got a problem, then go'.

Mason defends his position, adding: 'I'm bringing entertainment back,', but it fell on deaf ears - with even the crowd turning against him.

'Don't boo me! I'm doing this for you! I'm doing this for entertainment.'

At that point the successful hopefuls swivel their chairs in the opposite direction, while Olly Murs says to camera: 'This is going horribly wrong.'

Seconds later and Mason had been booted from the competition - showing little or no remorse.

The singer was later brought back for the live shows after Tom Bleasby, 19, suddenly left for personal reasons.

He received a frosty reception from the audience to start with but turned things around and managed to finish seventh and secure a place on the X Factor arena tour.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Mason said: 'I’m excited about the tour, it’s a step towards having my own arena show.'

And never one to be short on confidence, he revealed he would love to headline the hometown leg of the tour.

He added: 'I would really love it if I could go last at the Genting. I know it will be the winner, but I think my home town people would appreciate if I put on a special show for them.'
