They were reportedly spotted 'canoodling' at an Ed Sheeran concert in Sydney earlier this month.

And now, according to Woman's Day, friends have confirmed that Russell Crowe and the mother of the famous rugby-playing Burgess brothers, Julie, are in fact an item.

'It's definitely on. The boys are really supportive of Julie and want her to be happy,' a friend of the family allegedly told the magazine.

The publication also claims that Russell's ex-wife Danielle Spencer has been left shocked by her former husband's new relationship with Julie, whom he has known since 2009.

The magazine says that after seeing a photo of her eldest son Charles, 12, at the Sheeran concert with Julie, her boys, Luke, who used to play for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sam, who will once again play with the Rabbitohs next year, and Sam's fiancee's Phoebe Hooke, Danielle had her concerns.

Julie shared a happy snap to her Twitter account that night writing: 'Brilliant show! RT @SamBurgess8: What an awesome night @edsheeran 's Sydney concert last night. What an absolute hero'

The Daily Telegrap h reported that it was at the same concert Russell and Julie were spotted sharing a 'deeply affectionate' moment and were seen coming together for an 'embrace and more'.

This is not the first time the pair have been linked.

When rumours of a romance first began to surface in 2012 after Danielle and Russel had split, Sam adamantly denied any romantic links between his mother and the Hollywood star, saying they were 'just mates'.

As owner of the NRL team the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Russell has formed a close relationship with the Burgess brothers over the years.

In 2009, Julie and Russell first met when he was responsible for persuading young England international forward Sam to sign with the Rabbitohs over other clubs.

Julie, a Yorkshire school teacher, followed her sons out to Australia in 2012, having lost her husband Mark to motor neurone disease in 2007.

Sam played with the Rabbitohs from 2010-2014 before switching codes to play rugby union in England for Bath.

A few weeks ago, he and his fiancee Phoebe returned to Australia after Sam ended his multi-million dollar contract with Bath, just 12 months into his three-year contract.

He will be back playing NRL with the Rabbitohs next year.

Meanwhile his brothers Tom and George also play for the team, while Luke recently went over to the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles side.

Russell's passionate involvement with the team has been attributed to the breakdown of his marriage to Danielle, telling Sunday Mornings on CBS that: 'It's probably cost me a marriage.'
