EXCLUSIVE BY CHRIS WHEELER: Louis van Gaal has bowed to player pressure in an attempt to keep his job at Manchester United. The beleaguered United boss has agreed to relax the strict regime that has proved so unpopular among his squad following a meeting with senior players Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata at the start of the week. Van Gaal still has the support of the players but recognised an urgent need for change after seeing United lose three games in a row. The run has plunged his future at Old Trafford into doubt as he prepares for their Boxing Day trip to Stoke City.
Make mine a treble! Hiddink tells his Chelsea charges to win the Champions League and FA Cup... and clinch a finish in the top-four
MATT LAWTON: Guus Hiddink has thrown down a challenge for his players to chase Chelsea's very own Triple Crown. He wants to win the Champions League, the FA Cup and finish in the top four of the Barclays Premier League. It is a tall order for the fallen champions, who are wallowing in 15th position.
JAMIE CARRAGHER: Kane can fire Spurs to a top-four finish, Mahrez reminds me of Messi... and why I want Arsenal to win title
JAMIE CARRAGHER: So another year is almost over and, as this is my final column, I wanted to look back at the past 12 months and recognise those individuals who, in their own unique way, have left a lasting impression on me. I'll remember 2015 as being the year the Barclays Premier League recaptured its unpredictability and drama and I don't think anyone could disagree we watch the most exciting football in the world - what would we do without it?! Best wishes to all for the New Year.
Pochettino quotes Spears lyrics to make point about Tottenham keeping focus on top four bid
In a strange season of surprises it was gloriously appropriate that Mauricio Pochettino was asked to consider Arsenal winning the title and responded by reciting Britney Spears lyrics. The question, specifically, was whether he would be satisfied if Tottenham hit their target of a top-four finish, but had to make do with watching Arsenal win the Premier League as well
You play like a woman... agent's jibe made Everton's Lukaku release his inner beast
DOMINIC KING: For a split-second it seems as if Romelu Lukaku is kidding. Sitting in the library at Everton's Finch Farm training base, the subject of his vast improvement in 2015 has arisen and he has been asked to divulge his secret. His answer, initially, sounds surreal. 'It was just me in the summer, playing the ball against a wall,' says Lukaku, his giant frame draped over a two-seat couch. So no extra one-to-one coaching? No hours spent with a laptop studying clips of his own performances and others of the best strikers in the game? Just a ball and a wall?
DUNCAN FERGUSON: Everton legend on Lukaku, Rooney, chances of silverware... and his love for the Toffees
ELLIOTT BRETLAND: Duncan Ferguson hung up his boots an Everton hero, adored by an entire generation of Toffees, and the former No 9 is now having a resounding influence on the strikers who followed in his footsteps. Romelu Lukaku has scored 13 Premier League goals this season, has netted in eight consecutive Everton matches and will continue to hunt down Jamie Vardy's record should he get a goal in the Blues' Boxing Day trip to Newcastle.
LUCAS LEIVA EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool are missing Kop idol Gerrard so much... nobody will take his No 8 shirt or even his locker
MATT LAWTON: The longest-serving player at Liverpool has witnessed a fair amount of upheaval in almost nine years with the club. Managers have come and gone. Players have come and gone. At one stage earlier this year he very nearly left himself. But Lucas Leiva says certain things have remained the same, even if one particular example only highlights the fact that change is not always for the better. Lucas says the departure of Steven Gerrard, and Jamie Carragher before that, has left a huge void inside the Liverpool dressing room.
Christmas crack-up! Merry Mertesacker serenades festive Arsenal fans with German rendition of Silent Night
Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker spread his own version of Christmas cheer with a heartfelt, if not the most tuneful, version of the carol Silent Night in its original German. 'We hope you and your family have a great Christmas,' said the 31-year-old before bursting into a rendition of the song which was composed in his mother tongue with the lyrics refashioned for English countries.
Laser-sharp Rory out to regain No 1 spot... After my eye operation, I've set my sights on Spieth and winning a green jacket
DEREK LAWRENSON: Given his wealth and the circles he moves in, you might have thought it impossible for Rory McIlroy to enjoy a Christmas present this year with childlike wonder. But you would be wrong. The gift of perfect vision is something he has wanted since the age of 18 and, having finally had his eyes zapped earlier this month, he has been blown away by the results. 'Look at the small writing on that plug,' said the 26-year-old, staring at the socket about 20ft away. 'I can even read that!'
Bojan speaks a language Stoke fans love as Spanish sensation looks to deliver Christmas gift against Manchester United
ADAM CRAFTON - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: It is perhaps an indication of quite how comfortable Bojan Krkic feels at Stoke City that he is readying his Cheshire home for the New Year arrival of his uncles, aunties and young cousins. Bojan's parents will on be the terraces at the Britannia on Boxing Day as Stoke City host a beleaguered Manchester United. They will quickly learn that their son has become a cult hero in the Potteries...
Rooney comes out fighting for Van Gaal: We're all trying to save our manager's job, vows captain
As pressure mounts on Louis van Gaal's position at Manchester United, Wayne Rooney insists players are still fighting for the manager to turn their season around. United have failed to win their last six games in all competitions, which have included crashing out of the Champions League at the group stage and slipping out of the Premier League top four, while the Dutchman has been criticised for a lacklustre style of play. The 69-year-old cut a press conference short on Wednesday following suggestions that sacked Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is being lined up as his replacement, but Rooney is adamant that players are still behind Van Gaal.
England are underdogs against South Africa but birthday boy Cook says pace attack will compensate for Anderson absence
PAUL NEWMAN IN DURBAN: It was all going so well. England were looking so good in a proper warm-up match in Pietermaritzburg that comparisons were even being made with the super smooth build up to their winning Ashes winter under Andrew Strauss. Then a spanner was quickly thrown into the works. Just when it felt that England just might be able to knock the world's best team, looking unusually vulnerable after heavy defeat in India, off their lofty perch, injury struck Jimmy Anderson and reality came calling again.
Beefy walks the Rainbow Nation: Sportsmail joins England cricket icon Sir Ian Botham on epic 110-mile challenge in South Africa
Sir Ian Botham has just completed his 16th charity walk in 30 years - an epic 110-mile adventure across the 'Rainbow Nation' that is South Africa. The England cricket icon was raising funds for four local charities and walked in eight stages in six different cities before concluding the walk with a safari. Liverpool striker Sturridge will re-do personal pre-season over Christmas period to finally get fit for boss Klopp
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of the club's Christmas period to try and get to the bottom of his recurring injury problems. Sturridge, 26, has started just one match since Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield in October and hasn't played since complaining of hamstring pain in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle a fortnight ago.
Arsenal stars in high spirits as they train on Christmas Day ahead of Southampton trip
It may well be the festive season but when you're in the hunt for the Premier League title, there's still plenty of hard work to be done. Despite having to train on Christmas Day, Arsenal's players were still in a cheerful mood as they prepared for their Boxing Day trip to Southampton. And with good reason - following an excellent opening half to the campaign, Arsene Wenger's side are just two points off the summit and installed as title favourites.
Howe's former pupil Keown pays tribute as Arsenal show respect to former coach on programme
MARTIN KEOWN: As an aspiring defender at Arsenal having somebody like Don around was only good news. I couldn't have had a better apprenticeship. Don was very meticulous and happiest on the training ground. He had it all planned out - how you should defend as a team, a back four, a unit and an individual.
Sinfield spent a lifetime earning legend status in rugby league... now, SPOTY runner-up wants to crack a new code
INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS FOY: It was both Kevin Sinfield's parting gift to rugby league and the game's farewell present to a favourite son - second place in the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year poll, ahead of various champions and icons. The 35-year-old flew to Belfast after helping Yorkshire Carnegie win their Championship clash at London Scottish last Saturday and the following day he wound up clutching a trophy on stage and being feted by the great and the good in attendance. Having crossed codes last month, for a final career challenge, he reverted to being a Rhino to claim yet another coveted prize.

It's time I blitzed England: Steyn out to improve poor record against Cook's men
PAUL NEWMAN: Dale Steyn has admitted South Africa are in need of 'coaching and guidance' as they prepare to face England on Boxing Day following their recent meltdown in India. Home advantage means the South Africans - who remain No 1 in the Test rankings despite their traumatic 3-0 defeat by the Indians - will begin the four-match series against Alastair Cook's side as favourites. But the manner of that loss, in which they went down by 108 runs in Mohali, 124 in Nagpur and a whopping 337 in Delhi, has shaken the dressing-room to the extent that Steyn - the world's greatest fast bowler - has challenged his team-mates to get their heads right.
