A right royal thumping: William and Harry help local pub team to resounding 4-1 win in the annual Sandringham Christmas Eve football match

  • Royal brothers usually play on opposing teams but played together today in annual charity football match in Norfolk
  • Played in yellow and black for local pub The Black Horse Inn, but neither scored and a 13-year-old netted first three
  • Harry, 31, and William, 33, both made sure they'd stretched before - doing push ups and jumping jacks on the pitch
  • William was seen limping at one point in the second half after a player stood on his toe but recovered and played on

They usually take their places on opposite sides of the pitch but this year, royal brothers William and Harry played together to help their team to victory in the traditional Christmas Eve charity football match.

The princes joined forces after William missed last year's match and they made a formidable team in the Norfolk fixture at Castle Rising, near the royal Sandringham estate where the Royal family spend Christmas.

With leg stretches, push-ups and jumping jacks, William, 33, and Harry, 31, made sure they were well warmed up before the match, although William appeared to pick up a knock in the second half, limping for a while but recovering and playing on.

Donning yellow and black shirts, they played for the local pub side The Black Horse Inn, although they didn't manage to score, outshone by a 13-year-old local boy who netted the first three goals to cheers and congratulations from his high-society team-mates.

Father-of-two William was pictured bending down to touch his toes and also doing press ups on the pitch before kick-off, while he must have been chilly as he put his grey hooded sweatshirt on with white shorts.

He was also pictured running around waving his arms to warm up in the cold December weather, but they braved the 40mph winds and torrential rain to put in a good performance in front of the 200-strong crowd.

William proudly sported stripy socks in claret and sky blue to support his football team Aston Villa.

Both princes wore shirts emblazoned with the name of the Black Horse Inn, the local pub in Castle Rising.

Harry wore his with black football shorts, and used the fence to keep him upright while he stretched his hamstring by pulling his leg up behind him.

Details of how the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be spending Christmas have been released.

William and Kate will be at the Queen’s traditional Christmas dinner, which is enjoyed at Sandringham House on Christmas Eve. Children are expected to be on their best behaviour, and no one goes to bed before the Queen retires.

Both William and Kate will still, as tradition dictates, attend a Christmas Day morning service at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Sandringham estate.

William hinted in a recent interview that George may also attend for the first time, along with his sister. But while senior Royals will then head back to Sandringham for lunch, the Cambridges will go to Anmer for lunch with the Middletons, where roast turkey from the Sandringham estate will be the only similarity to the other Royal gathering.

The football match is an annual tradition for the royals but last year William gave it a miss to enjoy a festive break at his home in nearby Anmer Hall.

The Duke of Cambridge had injured his ankle in an earlier game and had to sit out the match.

Prince Harry was left to represent the palace alone but was a key member of the winning team, making tackles and getting involved in the action.

Last year, Harry was joined last year by Kate's brother James Middleton, 27, who made his first ever appearance in the Christmas Eve match.

He and James played in the winning team and ended up celebrating a landslide 7-2 victory.

Prince Harry played right wing and James played in defence, but there was no sign of Prince William, who played in the match last year.

At one point, Harry had to climb over a fence to retrieve the football after it got kicked off the pitch.

The royal was a key member of the team, making tackles and getting involved in the action as well as being nominated to take all of the corners.
