Miley Cyrus released a new track titled My Sad Christmas Song on Christmas Eve.

The heart-wrenching tune sees the 23-year-old voice feelings of loneliness and regret over a failed relationship.

And the emotional content of the song has many questioning if it might be about her ex Liam Hemsworth who she dated for three years before splitting in 2013.

While since then she dated Patrick Schwarzenegger and was even linked to Victoria's Secret Angel Stella Maxwell, the lyrics appear to refer to someone she dated over two years ago.

The timeline would fit for ex fiance Liam, 25, who is the younger brother of Chris Hemsworth. 

Miley introduced the song on the day before Christmas via Twitter with the note: 'Out nowwwwww on SoundCloud!!! #mysadchristmassong'.

The lyrics for the song express the pop star's sense of loneliness over the holiday season.

'This is my sad Christmas song,' she croons, 'I've had it stuck in my head all day long / I wrote it on the car on my ride home'.

'Cause I knew I'd walk in the door and I'd be alone /Cause there's no one here next to me,' the former child star continues.

She then goes on to explain how she's coping with the sadness of the holiday: 'This is my sad Christmas song / So I rip another bong...'

'I never been good at making plans / Next year, I'm gonna be with my man / My little sister says I'm the Grinch / But my mom thinks I'm just a b**ch'.
