Courting controversy again! Photographer Terry Richardson and pregnant girlfriend pose up as Joseph and Mary ahead of the most sacred Christian day of the year

Some people seek to achieve enlightenment, some seek to achieve inner peace but it seems like this fashion star seeks to achieve infamy over all of that.

Controversial photographer Terry Richardson has lived up to his reputation by created a left-of-centre nativity scene on Christmas Eve.

The 50-year-old celebrity photographer and pregnant love Alexandra 'Skinny' Bolotow decided to re-enact the night Jesus was born, playing the role of Joseph and the Virgin Mary.

The snapper posted a picture of himself and his pregnant girlfriend dressed in full biblical costume on Instagram on Thursday night.

While no doubt in churches across the world people were also re-enacting the nativity, Terry gave his version a standard Richardson controversial spin.

The couple were superimposed in front of a photograph of the Bates Motel - the eerie setting for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

In their Christmas post, 32-year-old Alexandra cradles her pregnant belly, while Terry holds on to their dog, who is dressed as a lamb.

While the image is likely to scandalize some Christians, Terry was not done there with his Christmas controversy.

Earlier in the day, the photographer posted an image of a man dressed as Santa Clause with a scantily clad woman kneeling in front of him, suggesting she was performing a sex act.

The photographer captioned the rather crude snap: 'Don't think this is Mrs. Claus.'

While Terry is a divisive figure in the fashion world and popular culture, recently he has been showing his softer side as he and his girlfriend prepares for the birth of their twins.

The photographer has been cataloging his love's changing physique with a series of far from standard pregnancy shots.

Most recently, the photographer shared an image of his assistant turned girlfriend in silhouette but naked. 

At the end of November, Terry shared a picture of Alexandra lying down on her side on a rug, again totally naked, with an arm covering up her breasts. He captioned the picture: 'Party of three.'

And two weeks before that, in early November, Terry shared his first image of Alexandra flaunting her baby bump, which saw his former assistant posing in a pair of tights and a lacy black bra, with her hands behind her back, sticking out her bump.

'Happy Hump Day,' Terry wrote as the caption.

The twins come after the couple lost at least one previous pregnancy.

After Page Six reported they were expecting their first child - or in their case children - together, Terry spoke about the fertility struggles.

He said: 'Babies' first Page Six shout out!' he wrote. 'We weren't planning to make this news quite so public quite so soon, because we are very cautious after going through some very difficult and heartbreaking losses, and always afraid of jinxing it, but since the cat is out of the bag...

Alexandra has stood by Terry's side throughout a series of scandals, including accusations of sexual misconduct by multiple models.
