A Russian billionaire who purchased his daughter an $88million New York City apartment for her to live in while she attended college has been put the property back on the market.

Dmitry Rybolovlev bought the penthouse residence at 15 Central Park West in 2011 for his daughter Ekaterina, paying what was at the time a record price for a Manhattan apartment.

At the time he was in the process of finalizing his divorce from his wife and Ekaterina's mother, Elena, and was ordered by a judge not to sell any of his properties until the separation was finalized.

The couple finalized their divorce this past October, after Elena's settlement was reduced from a staggering $4.5billion to a still very healthy $603million, leaving Dmitry free to sell the property.

A source told the New York Post that Dmitry may have trouble selling the apartment, or getting the price he wants, due to the declining New York City real estate market.

That being said, an investor group purchased a unit in the new luxury Manhattan apartment building One57 for $91.5million and the penthouse in that same complex was sold for a little over $100million last year.

When Rybolovlev purchased the apartment, his daughter was studying at an undisclosed U.S. university.

The 6,744-square-foot apartment boasts ten rooms and a wraparound terrace.

Rybolovlev is one of the small group of Russians who became fabulously wealthy during the post-Soviet privatization of the economy and are known as oligarchs. He is the former owner of fertilizer business Uralkali.

In 2008, Mr Rybolovlev, 43, bought Donald Trump's 33,000-square-foot Florida estate - Maison L'Amitie - for $95million in cash.

He is the owner of the French football team AS Monaco and used to run Russia's largest potash fertiliser company Uralkali.

He is listed as the 156th richest person in the world, according to Forbes, which estimated his wealth at $8.5billion.
