'Go to bed!' Martian star Matt Damon tells his children to hit the hay after watching him win best actor at the Golden Globes

He simply shook his head after Ricky Gervais joked he was the only person his good friend Ben Affleck had not cheated on.

So it made it all the more wholesome when Martian star Matt Damon thanked his wife and told his children to go to bed after watching him win his best actor in a motion picture gong at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

The 45-year-old looked delighted to have landed the prestigious prize, even though the show's host had earlier openly mocked him for being in the musical or comedy category.

The father-of-four said: 'My kids are watching so I have to thank my kids, because I told them if I got on TV, I'd definitely say something to them.

'So get ready to go to bed.'

He then turned his attention to his spouse of more than 15 years, former barmaid Luciana Barroso, who he met while filming Stuck On You in Miami.

The emotional actor said: '(To) my wife, thank you Lucy for everything.'

Matt won rave reviews for his turn as an injured astronaut who get stranded on Mars for four years, and he paid tribute to the film's director for making his performance possible.

He said: 'We had this incredible crew and incredible cast, and it really all came down to Ridley Scott.'

The Cambridge, Massachusetts native also said the fact he has been successful for so long has made him appreciate just how plummy a job he has compared to his less successful peers.

The Good Will Hunting star said: 'I was here 18 years ago, it has literally been 18 years since I have been here doing this.

'And with a little more context I know how lucky I am and how lucky I am to do this for a living.'
