Therapy, EMDR Psychotherapy + Professional Consultations

Kim Seelbrede views many mental health issues such as addictions and eating disorders as symptoms that hold meaning, as such, can be understood and healed when the root of the problem is addressed. As an integrative therapist, she understands the importance of integrating important behavioral interventions into the treatment to further support healing. Individuals enter therapy for a variety of reasons, including the desire to find meaning and purpose in their lives and a search for a deeper connection to self and others. Kim is sensitive, open and respectful of individuals who seek answers to spiritual concerns, which she feels may be the root of much suffering today. To help address developmental and other sources of trauma, Kim Seelbrede is a level II EMDRIA-trained EMDR therapist (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing). EMDR therapy can successfully be used for trauma, attachment deficits, accidents, abuse, losses, anxiety, blocked energy, negative beliefs, physical symptoms, irrational emotions, phobias, addictions, compulsions, performance blocks and painful memories. She uses this modality to unlock the wisdom and innate healing capacity of the mind and body that has been blocked and can be unblocked. Kim Seelbrede is a mind-body practitioner and registered yoga therapist (RYT 200, 500). Consultation sessions are an opportunity to obtain helpful information and education for clients and their families. She is delighted to share her resources and make traditional and complementary/alternative referrals to allied professionals such as therapists, psychologists, internists, psychopharmacologists or psychiatrists.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR treatment can be a powerful form of therapy as a stand-alone modality or as an adjunct to psychotherapy sessions. Francine Shapiro, PhD developed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) in the late l980's, as a breakthrough therapy to overcome the devastating effects of psychological trauma. Therapists and psychologists who use EMDR attest to the healing power of this treatment, and controlled research studies consistently demonstrate its efficacy and effectiveness. EMDR psychotherapy facilitates adaptive information processing and patients are able to reprocess traumatic information until it is no longer psychologically disruptive. Kim Seelbrede offers this intervention to alleviate symptoms related to trauma as well as other distressing symptoms such as: phobias, anxieties, fears, panic disorder, obsessions, depression, eating disorders, medical trauma, insomnia, sexual and emotional abuse, flashbacks, relationship issues, self-defeating patterns, poor self-esteem, accidents, performance problems and triggers for addictions.  This treatment modality is based on neuroscience of the brain and uses bilateral stimulation to process through memory networks and release the emotional charge associated, which results in Compared to traditional forms of cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT, EMDR has proven to be extremely effective in treating even the most problematic issues in less time.  Clients utilizing EMDR appear to have less chance of their problems returning in the future after treatment is complete because healing is believed to take place at the level of the nervous system. EMDR is effective for changing negative thought patterns, emotional reactions, entrenched habits and even physical discomfort that people can’t “think" their way out of. EMDR has given clinicians and their clients the ability to essentially reverse all those negative patterns and responses that have developed in your brain, body, and nervous system. Kim Seelbrede is a level II EMDRIA-trained EMDR clinician with a private psychotherapy and consultation practice in Manhattan. Learn more about EMDR Therapy Here.

Coaching

It can be lonely at the top especially for individuals unwilling or unable to trust and talk to others about their experience. Type A entrepreneurs often don’t talk about things and certainly aren't likely to express emotions. They problem solve and move forward. What happens when they stumble upon patterns and obstacles that come up for them again and again? Executives, officers and entrepreneurs hire coaches to help them remove obstacles and learn to be clear in their lives so they can see things about their behavior that interferes with success and performance. Coaching provides leaders with high-performance communication and leadership skills. They learn to communicate in ways that increase their chances for success, and ensures that others receive the information without getting defensive, as an example. Clients seeking coaches are not looking to heal issues rooted in the past, nor are they looking for an expert to help them understand and explore their complicated, emotional lives. While the past may be discussed on occasion, it is only addressed in the context of unearthing the areas of one's history, whether real, misinterpreted, distorted or some combination, that may be blocking the client from moving forward. The focus is always on clearing the path, as needed, to make the client more available for a new reality and way of life which includes movement and taking action. Generally speaking, coaching clients are men and women who are busy, self-directed, goal and performance-oriented, high-achievers who thrive using personal accountability, honesty, feedback, perspective shifting, action steps and focused, challenging questions that will bring them extraordinary results. Partnering with a life coach can be supportive, encouraging and empowering, and can help clients navigate change and restore balance and fulfillment. Whether it’s taking control of one's health, losing weight, repairing a relationship or transitioning to a new chapter in life, coaching can provide the needed inspiration, knowledge, accountability and results one desires. The Power Team of EMDR + Coaching

As a coach and consultant, I am able to use EMDR to enhance the effectiveness with my coaching clients. Coaches and consultants who use EMDR do so because the process is efficient and effective and the results endure. While "verbal" coaching can be effective for some, “thinking yourself into feeling better and changing behaviors” often fails many hopeful coaching clients. EMDR, when combined with specific coaching techniques has the benefit of stimulating the client’s own brain and nervous system to function at a much higher level. As a results-oriented solution, the power team of EMDR and coaching has proven to be extremely effective in treating even the most difficult problems in a short amount of time.  The lasting changes produced by the EMDR process seem to “stick” for clients, and doesn't require the ongoing “conditioning” that traditional “verbal” coaching does.

Coaching motivates, inspires and supports clients by helping them:

  • Observe and challenge the stories that perpetuate inertia
  • Identify unhelpful patterns and habits that are obstacles to change
  • Partialize concerns and problems into manageable pieces
  • Move beyond and transform limiting self-concepts
  • Face emotions like fear, that keep them feeling paralyzed
  • Learn to communicate honestly and directly
  • Develop direction and clarity in various aspects of  life
  • Find innate strengths and build on them
  • Uncover passions, become motivated and inspired
  • Learn to dream and think "big"
  • Explore creativity and practice balance in all areas of life
  • Improve personal, professional and spiritual connections
  • Design a life that is aligned with one's "true self "and core values

Executive Coaching

Executive coaching improves levels of productivity & performance and provides executives with the skills needed to succeed in todays competitve environment. I work directly with corporations as well as individuals to improve leadership capabilities, management skills and interpersonal and relational techniques. I recognize the “trickle-down” effect of discord at the managerial and executive levels. Awareness of this interconnection is key to improving levels of performance and productivity as well as reducing organizational stress and improving interpersonal and communication skills throughout all levels of the corporate environment. Whether you are looking to improve productivity of the entire work force within your company or reach your potential as an individual, executive coaching can provide the necessary tools for success. Clients are helped to develop exceptional leadership skills, solve personal and interpersonal issues, and create a culture of accountability and personal integrity. Working with top executives in the country and renowned for resolving problems and improving performance and communication. Clients reduce conflicts and experience freedom from what has been holding them back and experience a renewed sense of excitement and creativity.

Clinical Professional Consultations + Referrals in Manhattan

Kim Seelbrede, a New York State licensed psychotherapist, offers psychological consultation and guidance to individuals and families to help them move through personal and life challenges, a difficult transition or a crisis. Clients benefit from the expertise of working with a highly-trained clinician who provides a focused, solution-based approach using assessment, education, guidance, advice and resources. One example might be a family member who is struggling with an addiction and/or a mental health issue. Consultations tend to be time-limited and problem or goal-oriented in nature. Consultations allow a client, parent or family member to explore concerns and to make decisions or changes in their lives that move them in a helpful direction.

The consultation process is an opportunity to speak about a crisis, or problems and concerns in one's current situation. A consultation is a proactive and preventative approach to obtaining guidance and support during a challenging situation. What makes this different from ongoing therapy is that the experience is limited -- usually one or two sessions, and is not meant to replace ongoing therapy or counseling.  A consultation can help a client gain supportive advice, insight, perspective, guidance and resources for their particular circumstance.  At the end of the consultation process Kim Seelbrede offers clients an assessment of the situation,  a recommendation for treatment if needed and possible referrals to allied professionals, medical doctors or other psychological services. Because of the nature of the consultation process, clients are offered sessions in Manhattan or via Skype for convenience. Learn more here.

Self-Care

“Healthcare without self care is sick care.”

— Roshi Joan Halifax

Self-care is not being selfish or indulgent, it is the ability to care for one's own emotional needs, set boundaries with people, manage anxiety, anger, sadness and other feelings or emotions and attend to one's more complex needs. This can happen even when other people's demands or actions make this a challenge. Society as well as friends, family and employers often have expectations of us; we subjugate our own needs in an attempt to please and care for others. In the mental health field, Individuals with low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, dependency issues and codependent individuals fail to care for themselves, often until it's too late and they become sick. Some examples of chronic health conditions that benefit from self-care support and advocacy are the following: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or CFS, arthritis, MS, Lupus, asthma, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, Lyme disease, autoimmune thyroid disorders (Hashimoto's & Graves), depression, IBS and diseases of aging as a few examples. Conventional medicine rarely addresses the root causes of many of these chronic conditions, and treats only the symptoms. A whole-body approach gives clients the choice to make radical lifestyle changes that may actually cure these common diseases or at least, greatly reduce symptoms and suffering.

Many simply aren't aware that modifications to one's habits and lifestyle can make a world of difference in terms of health and wellbeing. Yes, change takes work and the motivation to be disease-free or radically healthy must be present. Therapy and coaching can help with self-care issues by uncovering the root of the problem such self-esteem issues and other obstacles that lead to a failure to  treat one's body with care. As example, when someone is depressed, therapy can help improve one’s mood thus leading to improved self-care. Helping a depressed person create space for self-care can be a challenge, but it often improves depression. The failure to care for oneself due to wanting to please or care for others, such as in a codependent relationship, or in the case of overly demanding family members, can indicate some difficulty setting boundaries, identity and self-image.

Kim Seelbrede, LCSW, RYT (200 + 500) trained with Donna Karan's groundbreaking Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program with a focus on five modalities: restorative yoga therapy, essential oils, Reiki, nutrition and contemplative care. She learned the techniques of grounding, relaxation, mindfulness, present-focused meditation and restoration. What to Expect

Problems, challenges and long-standing difficulties are rarely resolved as quickly as people would like. Quick fixes, so to speak, are rare. Some problem behaviors can and should be addressed immediately. I believe in an integrated approach to solving psychological issues that addresses the root cause of the problem as well as offering tools and strategies that change maladaptive thoughts and behaviors.  I am able to provide both short-term therapy such as solution-focused treatment or coaching as well as long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy that works to resolve conflicts, obstacles and dynamics that interfere with leading a vital and fulfilling life. I am motivated to help my clients achieve their goals as quickly as possible. Some individuals have longstanding difficulties that may require a longer course of treatment.  A consultation and assessment is the best way to determine client needs.
