'It is an indescribable feeling, I am really glad of course,' Elneny told Arsenal Player. 'Arsenal is one of the world's greatest teams, and I am very keen to participate positively with my new team, God willing, and to give my best for the team and for myself.

'I would like to tell [the fans] that, although you have not seen much of me, I promise I will contribute positively with the team. I am hoping that we win the Premier League and cup this season, and the Champions League as well.

'Mr Wenger is a highly respected manager and one of the world's best managers. It is my honour to be trained under his management.'

A full international, Elneny is an intelligent reader of the game in midfield while offering tireless energy in the middle of the park.

He could be contention for Arsenal's clash with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday and has been assigned 35 as his squad number.

Manager Wenger added: 'He can be box to box and be a holding midfielder so that is for us very promising. We wanted a versatile player and I wanted a player who can play defensive but can as well play to box to box.

'His strengths are his technical level, his vision, his intelligence, his disciplined attitude and his physical attitude to compete at a high level. I think he has the physical qualities to play at the top level.

'Where he needs to adapt is to the challenges, the force needed in the Premier League to survive. I think that could demand a little bit of adaptation. But overall I think he has all the attributes to do well.'

Following the Barclays Premier League draw at Anfield, Wenger had revealed: 'Elneny will of course join us. He has joined us. We will see if he can qualify for Sunday.'

A statement on the club website said: 'The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes. Everyone at Arsenal would like to welcome Mohamed to the club.'

Elneny is expected to be their only January signing, though right back Mathieu Debuchy could leave after asking Wenger for a move.

The 23-year-old made nearly 100 appearances for Basle while winning three consecutive Swiss Super League titles.

His performances in Europe have been particularly impressive in that time, starring in victories against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Wenger could also have star winger Alexis Sanchez available for the Britannia Stadium clash, with the Chile international set to undergo a fitness test on Saturday.

The Frenchman added: 'He will have a definite test on Saturday. It's not impossible that he plays.'

WHO IS MOHAMED ELNENY?

Elneny was raised in northern Egypt, where he was spotted by Al Ahly and placed in the club's highly-rated youth academy.

However, deemed not up to standard with the national giants, Elneny moved on to El Mokawloon at the age of 16, where he eventually made his breakthrough into the first team.

He was trained as a centre back at Al Ahly before playing in a whole host of positions at his El Mokawloon, eventually settling in as a defensive midfielder. The Elneny of today is equally adept as a holding and box-to-box midfielder, standing at 5ft11, and his versatility may have been a factor in Arsenal's interest.

Elneny played alongside Mohamed Salah in Egypt and it didn't take long for him to follow in his friend's footsteps to Europe, signing for Basle a year after the former Chelsea winger as political unrest postponed the Egyptian Premier League.

Aged just 20, Elneny was a first-team regular towards the end of his first season and has made nearly 100 appearances for the club while winning three consecutive Swiss Super League titles. His performances in Europe have been particularly impressive in that time, starring in victories against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

The 23-year-old would be eligible to feature in Arsenal's Champions League campaign this season and could be a valuable addition, possessing the qualities to play alongside Aaron Ramsey as a sitting midfielder, as well as next to a Mathieu Flamini, or Coquelin, as an engine ready to help out in both boxes.

The cheap fee considering his potential makes him all the more attractive to Wenger, who is set to let Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Flamini leave on free transfers in the summer.

Arsenal fans have been longing for a physical presence in midfield for some time and while this may not be a record-breaker, Elneny, who has been capped 40 times by his country and played at the 2012 London Olympics, fits the Wenger mould.
