Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley got to work on the set of their new project this week.

On location in Pasadena for their upcoming HBO limited series Big Little Lies, Reese, 39, was smartly dressed, while Shailene was pictured in a more casual emsemble.

The blonde mother-of-three sported heeled boots and a green blouse as she got into character as busybody mum Madeline.

She wore a camel-coloured blazer on top to complete the stylish look.

Normally very health conscious, Woodley was seen smoking as she got into character as a young mother.

She was pictured looking tense as she took a call on a call phone wearing sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt.

Camera ready: Reese, 39, was pictured in a smart blazer and leather boots as she walked on the set of the HBO limited series

She means business: The mother-of-three looked great in a green blouse and tan jacket

Running the show: Reese is producing the series with Nicole Kidman and was seen clutching a coffee as she chatted with crew members

During the day The Fault In Our Stars actress was also seen getting hands on with a softball glove and ball as she played some sports with a young boy.

Big Little Lies also stars Nicole Kidman who produces the series alongside Witherspoon.

According to Variety the dark comic drama centres on three mothers of kindergartners - Celeste (Kidman), Madeline and Jane (Woodley) whose seemingly perfect lives unravel to the point of murder.

Suffering for her art: While the actress is usually very health conscious, on Wednesday she was smoking as she got into character as young mother Jane

The show is adapted by David E. Kelley from a novel by Liane Moriarty.

Laura Dern, Adam Scott, Zoë Kravitz and Kathryn Newton also star.

Just last week it was announced Alexander Skarsgård and James Tupper had joined the cast.

Skarsgård will play Kidman's husband, a successful businessman, loving father and devoted husband.

Tupper will play Witherspoon’s ex-husband, who’s now married to a young yoga instructor (Kravitz) and faces the challenges of co-parenting a teenage daughter (Newton) with his ex-wife.
