Leo, who won Best Actor at Sunday night's Golden Globes, spoke to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby about award season and when the presenting duo quizzed him on whether he would get lucky this year he responded candidly.

He said: 'I do know that it’s completely beyond my control at this point. It’s interesting, because that’s not why you do the work, you know?

'You do the work because you love making movies and you want to look back and have a filmography that you’re proud of.

'When you’re on set you have to give everything that you possibly can while you’re there but of course being recognised by your peers and all that other stuff that happens is kind of the cherry on the cake so to speak.

In a fight for survival, Glass treks through snow-covered forests, gets swept away in a waterfall, sleeps inside the carcass of a disemboweled horse and hungrily eats raw bison liver before making it back to his camp.

Leo told Phil and Holly about the bleak experience he suffered during filming: 'It was one of the most difficult experiences for the entire crew and cast… our director wanted to really immerse us in nature and give us a documentary feel to the movie making experience. So we were in sub-zero temperatures, and in the wilderness for nine months. It was a unique adventure.'

Phillip said of the viral moment: 'If Lady Gaga was to walk past you or brush your arm will you look quite so surprised this time?'

Laughing Leo replied: 'We were laughing about that afterwards. I actually had no idea who was passing me or what was going on, but that was a funny little bit that went around… we were laughing at it at the after party!'
