David Bowie makes video history as his music smashes Adele's Hello record with 51 million views in ONE day

Following the tragic news of his death this week, fans of David Bowie have flocked to various sites to listen to his music and pay tribute.

The iconic star’s catalog has drawn a staggering 51 million video views within 24 hours, breaking Adele’s comeback single Hello record, which racked up 36 million views in October.

Vevo, owned by Universal and Sony, hosts more than 60 Bowie videos, including Bowie’s early hits Space Oddity and The Jean Genie all the way to his most recent releases Lazarus and Blackstar.

The music video for Lazarus showed him lying in a hospital bed with bandages across his eyes, singing lyrics which after his death added poignancy.

‘I've got scars that can't be seen. I've got drama, can't be stolen. Everybody knows me now. Look up here, man, I'm in danger. I've got nothing left to lose,’ he sang.

Bowie's record producer, Tony Visconti said: ‘He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it.’

The catalog also saw a 5198% increase in views on January 11 over the average of the prior 7 days, with Lazarus being the most-watched video with 11.1M views.

Figures from global streaming service Spotify show there was a jump of 2822% in Bowie songs played in the hours after his death was announced.

Bowie will be honoured with a tribute at next month's Brit Awards, as well as a memorial concert at New York's Carnegie Hall on March 31.

The British musician, who died of cancer on Sunday, was named Best British Male at the BRITs twice - in 1984 and 2014 - and received the Outstanding Contribution to British Music award in 1996.

His 2014 win made him the oldest recipient of a Brit in the show's history, but he was noticeably absent from the ceremony, sending Kate Moss in an original Ziggy Stardust outfit to accept the trophy on his behalf.

Blackstar, released on January 8 to mark his birthday, looks certain to hold on to the number one spot in the charts on Friday.
