'Why are you here?' John Krasinski talks about his awkward night sitting at Leonardo DiCaprio's table at the Golden Globes

John Krasinski had a very awkward night at the Golden Globes.

While the actor sat at what was essentially the winners' table he was the odd man out during the ceremony that saw The Revenant sweep the board.

The 36-year-old was seated at Leonardo DiCaprio's table but actually never got a chance to speak to the star who picked up the gong for Best Actor.

Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which aired on Friday, John spoke of how he went solo to the Globes as his wife Emily Blunt was on location shooting a movie.

'Turns out when you go stag they put you at a great table,' he revealed. 'I was put at Leonardo DiCaprio's table. And that sounds really cool except I didn't chance to meet him.'

'I didn't want to be like "Hey I'm the guy who doesn't have anybody"', he said humorously.

He then went to talk about how he didn't know anyone at the table and was often caught between The Revenant's director Alejandro G Inarritu and Leo's celebration

'And then they won everything... so I'm in the middle of hugs and people are like "This was the best year ever!" and I was like "Wasn't it?!"'

'And then everybody went up and gave their speech and I felt pretty stupid,' The Office alum admitted.

'There was a moment when Alejandro, when he won, where he said "hi" to everyone and said "Thank you" because they worked on the movie and then he turned to me and was like "Why are you here?"'

The 13 Hours actor also spoke of how he and his wife Emily had a too-close-for-comfort encounter with a shark that 'looked like Jaws' while scuba diving.

'I was a hundred feet deep, it's like the bottom of the Earth,' he told Ellen of scuba diving.

''It's very scary. The crazy thing was we had 'snorkled with sharks' so our dive instructor, I think got really competitive, and was like 'Oh I'll show you some stuff.'

'He was like 'no, we're going to take you to grey reef sharks,' he said. The couple were on honeymoon after they wed in Italy in July, 2010.

'And I know every shark looks like Jaws, but these really look like Jaws and they're huge...and they swim very close,' he said.

The Office star admitted he had only managed to convinced his British wife to try scuba diving in the first place by assuring her sharks would never be a problem.

'Emily never wanted to learn scuba diving and I was like 'We'll never get into trouble with sharks'', he told Ellen.

'All of a sudden one broke off from the circle and started swimming behind us. I saw it and Emily didn't.

'He started to charge Emily, so my decision was 'If I spook her and she moves a lot, he might bite her.'

So instead he kept still and hoped for the best, admitting: 'I just let it ride.'

The shark drifted past Emily as she was making a thumbs up gesture, and when she realized the shark was so close 'air bubbles came out, she kind of passed out under water,' the actor said.

'All of her air just went to the top, it was pretty scary.'

But he said they then had a sweet underwater encounter with a sea turtle that set things right.

'A sea turtle that came up, I'm not kidding, put his arm around her and then started petting her head. He hugged her,' said John, showing underwater footage from their trip.

'It was like he knew she had had a bad day and was like 'sorry about my buddy Terry, he gets real close on the flybys.''

The Away We Go actor also opened up about their daughter Hazel, who was born February 2014.

'She's about to turn two,' he said. 'It's the greatest. Greatest thing ever.'

'She's talking a lot, she's starting to little bits. Like when she's looking for me, instead of saying 'Daddy, Daddy' she goes 'Where is that Daddy?''

And their daughter is copying a bit of her mother's accent, he revealed.

'She's also picking up on Emily's accent, so she doesn't say water she says 'whoo-ta.'

'I say just wait til kindergarten when people go 'what's that accent?' and she's like 'water! it's water!'

The actor was on the show to promote his new film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. The film, directed by Michael Bay, is out in the US on Friday.
