Will And Grace star Debra Messing to play Baby's mother in Dirty Dancing remake

Debra Messing is set to join the remake of Dirty Dancing.

The Will & Grace star is set to play Marjorie Houseman, the mother of Baby, according to EW on Thursday.

The 47-year-old actress has signed up for the role - played by Kelly Bishop in the original - for the new ABC version of the 1987 classic.

Debra has been fighting crime in the titular role on The Mysteries of Laura since 2014.

In the movie remake she plays the repressed matriarch, who is hoping for her summer vacation in the Catskills to rekindle the romance with her workaholic doctor husband.

However, the film's action centres around her youngest daughter, played by Scream Queens' Abigail Breslin, having a summer fling with the holiday camp's dance instructor Johnny Castle.

Patrick Swayze passed away in September 2009 - and there's no word on who will take the role of Johnny in the remake.

However, given that ABC also make Dancing With The Stars it would appear to have no shortage of potential talent to choose from.

The script is being written by American Horror Story’s Jessica Scharzer, so viewers can expect an edgier version of the saccharine original - although no doubt the most famous line: 'nobody puts Baby in the corner,' will remain.

ABC will be hoping to emulate the success of NBC’s musical The Wiz Live!, which delivered 11.5 million viewers.

Unlike Peter Pan Live or Fox’s upcoming Grease Live, Dirty Dancing won't be a live show, and there's not yet been a premiere date announced.

The magic of the classic movie has been hard to recapture previously, despite attempts both in a stage musical and a short-lived 1988 TV series, starring Patrick Cassidy and Melora Hardin.
