Now that's some comeback punch! Creed star Sylvester Stallone, 69, is nominated for his first Academy Award since 1977 when he got a nod for Rocky

He has not received an Academy Award nomination since 1977 when he was acknowledged for the drama Rocky.

But 39 years later Sylvester Stallone is back in the Oscar glow as on Thursday morning the action star was given a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work in Creed.

This comes on the heels of the 69-year-old vet getting a Golden Globe win for his role as Rocky Balboa.

After his nod in 1977, Stallone focused on making hit action films such as 1982's First Blood, 1986's Cobra and 1987's Over The Top.

He had a revival when he did Expendables; the third film came out in 2014.

As Stallone walked to the stage to accept his award at the Globes on Sunday, he received a standing ovation from the crowd, including an enthusiastic response from the film's star Jordan.

'I'm going to try to not get emotional,' the veteran actor, director and writer said as he began his speech. 'I am the sum total of everyone I've ever met, and I'm so lucky I've absorbed some of it.'

Later he apologized for not acknowledging his co-stars in the Globes speech. He tweeted: 'Samuel Jackson is upset that I foolishly forgot to mention the brilliant Ryan Coogler and MB Jordan he is right I owe them everything.'

The Academy Awards will air on February 28 on ABC with host Chris Rock.
