BR Class 40 '40145' Available Now

15/01/2016

http://store.steampowered.com/app/325965

One of the first mass produced diesel-electric locomotive classes for British Railways, the Class 40, comes to Train Simulator, from developer RailRight.

A total of 200 ‘Whistlers’ (so called because of their distinctive turbo whistle sound) were built by English Electric over a four year period from 1958, and were – for a time – considered to be the pride of British Rail’s early diesel fleet. The first of the Type 4 diesels was delivered on 14 March 1958 and pulled its first revenue-generating service between London Liverpool Street and Norwich a month later.

Despite the mixed success of the initial 10 Class 40 prototypes, BR ordered a further 190 locomotives all painted in diesel green livery. Such were the changes in railway working practices during the build period of the ‘Whistlers’, batches were delivered with significant design differences, including disc headcode markers, split headcode boxes and gangway doors.

A number of the Class were named after cruise ships as they hauled express trains to Liverpool, however as they locomotives were withdrawn from these services, so their names were removed. The ‘Whistlers’ could be seen over most of the BR network hauling flagship express passenger trains, however as they were replaced with more powerful locomotives, so their duties were moved to secondary passenger services and freight.

Withdrawals of the Class began in 1976 due to their lack of power and not being fitted with air braking, leaving them unsuitable to haul modern freight and passenger stock; however, it was another nine years before the whole Class was withdrawn.

The popularity of ‘Whistlers’ among rail fans has seen seven of the Class in preservation today, with 40145 (currently numbered 345 in its pre-TOPS guise) the first to enter preservation in 1984. Today, it has been restored to mainline standards and is unique in being the only Class 40 to be mainline certified.

Loco number 40145 is one of the three in Class currently owned and operated by the Class 40 Preservation Society (CFPS), and this model for Train Simulator is officially licensed by the Society. Available in both BR Blue and BR Large Logo liveries, the model includes standard (HUD compatible) and advanced versions and a wealth of details and enhanced functionality, including authentic acceleration and deceleration physics, air system simulation, electric system simulation, locomotive preparation and cold start simulation, functional radiator shutters, battery isolation, fully controllable lighting, independent controls in both cabs, change end switches, AWS isolators, simulated faults, selectable braking modes for air/vacuum and freight/passenger, changeable head code blinds and much more to provide the most authentic experience.

The locomotive is also Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the BR Class 40 on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam. Also included are scenarios specifically for the Midland Main Line London-Bedford route (available separately and required to play these scenarios).

Union Pacific FEF-3 Update released

Today we have released a patch for the Union Pacific FEF-3 and FEF-3 Overland Add-on Livery

The changelist is as follows:

  • Correction of some errors associated with the air pump:
    • a). The sound was missing from the air compressors in the Advanced version.
    • b). The bell, sanders and sludge removers weren't using main reservoir air.
    • c). The air compressors in the Advanced version were recharging the main reservoir too quickly (much faster than in the HUD version).

  • The brake handle positions are no longer reported (in the top-right-hand of the screen) when the brake difficulty is set to "Hard".

  • The embossed "844" shield on the floor of the cab is present only in the default version (black with silver striping, chrome plating and white-walled tyres) when the locomotive number is 844

This update is around 123mb in size and should download automatically through Steam.

About This Game

Enjoy these four extreme routes in Train Simulator 2016:

THE RIVIERA LINE: EXETER TO KINGSWEAR

Command the mighty Castle Class in the golden age of steam on the busy Cornish Riviera Line.

The line is renowned for its proximity to the south coast of England and joins the southern beaches just south of Starcross, showcasing stunning scenery and ocean views. Test your skills on this line with the Castle Class or GWR 4073, heralded as the most powerful locomotive when introduced in 1923. Set in the 1950s, this route is a challenging drive with some heavy steam machinery ready for even the most experienced of drivers.

WEST RHINE: COLOGNE TO KOBLENZ

Don't be taken by the beautiful landscape of the Rhineland-Palatinate, the Cologne to Koblenz line will keep all drivers on their toes.

Running parallel to the west bank of the Rhine for much of the journey, the route gives passengers spectacular views across the West Rhine area of West Germany. The route forms the southern stretch of Deutsche Bahn’s RE5 ‘Rhein Express’ service, which runs from Emerrich in the north west to Koblenz. Hourly intercity and ICE services, Regio passenger trains and various freight operations also frequent the line. Even the occasional heritage special can be seen in between the busy commuter services. Medieval towns and castles along the line, plus river barges passing serenely by remind passengers of the historic area they travel through between the two densely urban cities of Cologne and Koblenz. Large freight yards at Bruhl and Bonn-West are also well-known features, as well as the DB Museum at Koblenz-Lützel, which occupies a former depot linked to the main line.

SHERMAN HILL

Haul thousands of tons of cargo over Sherman Hill Summit in the legendary Union Pacific Gas Turbine.

Sherman Hill is a fantastic North American freight route running 60 miles between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. The route's tough grades resulted in the Union Pacific Railroad building new heavy freight locomotives to work the line. Drive this line with the UP GTELs, nicknamed "Big Blows" for their high-pitched scream. These consisted of three semi-permanently coupled vehicles, the leading A-Unit, the turbine housing B-Unit and a Fuel Tender. The turbines ran from the beginning of the 1960s until the end of the 1970s.

NORFOLK SOUTHERN COAL DISTRICT
EXCLUSIVE TO TRAIN SIMULATOR 2016 ON STEAM

Mile-long coal trains and distinctive street running set apart the beautiful Mon Line, running through the heart of Pennsylvania.

At the heart of Pennsylvania’s coal country, the rural Mon Line is today owned by Norfolk Southern with CSX Transporation also having trackage rights. Coal mines dominate the route, with important facilities at Bailey Mine and Emerald Mine connecting with a staging yard at West Brownsville from where coal trains continue on their way to power stations or to ports for export. More than 20 million tons of coal is annually transported along the line, much of it to Loveridge Secondary where it is transhipped from rail to river barges. Challenge your driving skills with heavy coal trains running along the 50 miles of rural countryside at the controls of GE's mammoth 4,400hp ES44AC diesel locomotive.

Pre-Release Review
Don't mistake my 100-odd hours in this game as a positive tale. Most of them were put on in 2011 and 2012.

This game is based off an outdated physics engine, using textures that are years old, by a company with a business model that puts that of PAYDAY 2 to shame. Just look at all the DLC. If I foolishly press "ADD ALL TO CART"... I am left with 232 items totalling upwards of $3000. I'm not joking, and here's a screen capture to prove it. (For the record, if you foolishly add all DLC to cart, you can clear your cart by going into Steam's settings, to 'web browser' then hitting 'delete all browser cookies.)

Each new iteration, all we get are UI changes and more DLC. In order for us who bought Train Simulator 2012/2013/2014 to "upgrade" to what DTG advertises each year, you have to essentially buy it again. Guess how?

And don't get too used to the DLC you buy functioning (especially DLC routes). If a change they make breaks it... it won't be fixed unless you go in there and ♥♥♥♥ around in the editor long enough to figure out what you need to do to fix it.

Steer clear.

The 2016 update is nothing more than a few graphical tweaks with some DLC smacked on to the game.
As of writing, since I got the free 2016 "update," absolutely NOTHING is different, aside from a slightly different splash screen, and the REMOVAL of features such as Sean Bean's fun little intro, and all music in the game.

My "upgrade" actually gets me LESS content than the previous version! On top of that, Launch issues plague the system, and it took me 45 minutes of work to get TS2016 to even verify its files and launch.
There are no UI changes (flaunted by Dovetail in the promo material), no graphical tweaks, and no more music or Sean Bean.

Plus, it's well known that they are moving to a completely new and VERY advanced engine for the next version, so this one is.... pointless really.

Save your money. Wait until the next big release.

I find this a huge disappointment from Dovetail, and it has me worried about the future of all of the properties they hold.

*EDIT* Minor amendments after Episode 18 of my show.

I guess it's time for me to write a proper review of this game now.

To cut to the chase, I think that Train Simulator 2016 is one of the worse video games I've played in my life. Bearing in mind, I've played Sonic 06, Megaman & Bass, Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly just no name a few. TS2016 doesn't even qualify for the "So bad it's good" tier or even the visualy pleasing tier and has been simply getting worse and worse every year. Some of the problems I have with this game are as follows:

- Appauling opimization on high end computers. I've heard reports of people with GTX 960s having various issues with this game.
- No DX12 support or DX11 support.
- No Rebinable controls. In 2015.
- Most of the features, such as Career Mode, serve no purpose. The XP points you recieve do bugger all at the end of the day. Unlike in Pokemon, Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger where XP points actually help you grow stronger in the game.
- Unrealistic physics.
- A very unstable engine. One could say you have a 50/50 chance of the game crashing whilst driving.
- Terrible loading times.
- Lack of respect for the source material for trains and routes (Great Western Mainline, North London Line and London To Brighton are good examples of this.)
- The game's downright INSULTING model for DLC. No, seriously, it's one of the worst. The company shove out DLC on a very frequent basis. Trains most of the time have unrealistic physics, sounds, consist formations and a lack of features. Routes are usually short, linear and offer the player to drive on...about 1 or 2 full services. Again, unacceptable for the money they're charging.

But by far the worst thing about this game is the company itself. As evidenced by the amount of DLC (totaling £3000+ mind you), they clearly only care about the money as trains have a sporadic field of quality, old routes are almost never updated with the new features and they constantly clog up the game with more content, in an attempt to say that "They listen to us" or "We do want to improve." The game is also becoming more and more of a casual scrub slideshow simulator than a freaking train simulator, with things such as Railfan Mode, which has been done before by members of the community and Career mode, which has zero gameplay purpose. Even after sending an E-mail to Dovetail Games, they for some reason, didn't manage to properly defend the purpose of Career Mode or Railfan Mode. I wonder why...

Out of the goodness of my heart, please, I emplore you, DO NOT buy this video game. You'll save yourself time, money, headaches and most importantly, sanity. You could end up becoming like me, sitting around making podcasts where I tear this game to shreads on Youtube. It ain't as fun as it sounds.

For the developers of this game, I shall leave you with an altered quote from Jesse Owens.

"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort, which is something I've yet to see you achieve."
