Focus: Students who are anxious, bored, fearful, or who simply believe that mathematics is unimportant, are likely to avoid the study of math. Math is the gateway to engineering and all scientific and technology fields. The current shortage of workers in many technical fields is a matter of national concern. Due to the shortage, the U.S. government has increased the number of persons who may enter the country with work visas in technological fields, although the immigration laws are more stringent since the terrorist attack of 2001. While much has been written about the decline of mathematics scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and a general weakness in mathematics instruction, setting higher standards and other reform measures have not had an appreciable effect. Clearly, research about attitudes toward mathematics are important in achievement and math anxiety. It would be beneficial for teachers in K-16 to understand current issues related to assessment and intervention strategies to promote better attitudes toward mathematics among students at all levels. Papers are invited that focus on such issues as persistence, self-confidence, attitudes, anxiety, assessment, intervention, and pedagogy. Who May Submit: Submissions are welcome from researchers, teacher action researchers, administrators and graduate students as well as others engaged directly in teaching at the K-16 levels. Please identify your submission with keyword: MATH Submission deadline: any time until the end of February 2008; see details for other deadline options like early, regular, and short.
