Photographer Edward Bishop, from London, who snapped ink aficionados' fingers in the capital and Brighton believes the edgy designs that are difficult to hide are going mainstream and losing their link with gang culture. He started the project in 2009 and has captured different sentiments including (clockwise from top left) a play on words with knuckle 'sandwich'; a 'self-made' woman; a funny twist on the traditional 'love hate tattoo; a Somerset-lover; a person with an inspirational motto and a 'true gent.'

More than a million Hindus in Malaysia celebrated the colourful Thaipusam festival today by gathering at a temple in an offering to the deity Murugan, while many pierced their bodies with hooks (left and bottom right). Hundreds of thousands met on the Batu Caves - an important religious site for Tamil Hindus on Kuala Lumpur's outskirts - with many walking up to 10 hours to the site, capped by a final 272-step climb to its limestone hilltop shrine. Many showed their devotion by the piercing their bodies with long skewers and by bearing the elaborately decorated home-made frames called 'kavadi'. Kavadi can weigh as much as 100 kilograms and are typically affixed to a person's body using sharp metal spikes dug into the skin.

Angry hippos were pictured thrashing in the water and snarling at each other in iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa. The older hippo decided to assert its dominance after the new male took over the pod. After constant probing by the younger bull (bottom right), the elder hippo decided to retaliate (left). It is rather common for males to attack offspring as they see them as a threat to their family.
