He's made his fortune singing about heartbreak and loneliness.

But Sam Smith was surrounded by a group of friends as he headed out for drinks in Miami, Florida on Saturday.

The Oscar-nominated 23-year-old singer was the centre of attention as he hit the streets, sporting a laid-back ensemble for his afternoon outing.

Sam opted for a plain grey T-shirt paired with blue jeans and navy plimsolls, jazzing up the look with a white zip-up top and a pair of shades.

He looked cool and casual on his outing, showing off a well groomed beard and his slimline physique, hard-earned after putting in hours at the gym and following a healthy eating plan.

The British singer was enjoying trip to the US, making the most of his free time as he continues to work on his second album, which he has hinted could be released this year.

The Money On My Mind hitmaker was clearly having a blast since he took to Instagram to share a snapshot of himself drinking a cocktail as big as his head.

Sam has every reason to celebrate with his friends since his Spectre theme song was nominated for Best Original song at the Academy Awards.

'I am sitting in a coffee shop with my mum and just found out I have an Oscar nomination,' Sam said in a statement given to EW following his nomination earlier this month.

The star has strong chances of winning in his category since the James Bond franchise scooped the prize in 2013 for Adele’s Skyfall theme tune.

He faces competition from Lady Gaga (The Hunting Ground’s Til It Happens To You), David Lang (Youth’s Simple Song #3), and The Weeknd (Fifty Shades of Grey’s Earned It).
