Madonna spanks Ariana Grande before presenting her with banana prize as she wraps up her difficult North American Rebel Heart tour

Madonna has been slated by fans for consistently turning up late during her Rebel Heart Tour, as she dealt with her troubled personal life.

But she ended her tour with a bang on Sunday night - with the help of a star-struck Ariana Grande.

Having defied her doubters by turning up on time, for once, the 57-year-old then put on a show to remember as she spanked the young singer before presenting her with a banana.

Though this wasn't the first time a spanking had been involved on tour, the 22-year-old was clearly confused as Madonna and her back-up dancers spun her around on stage to perform the routine.

Madonna initiated the spanking as she grabbed the fabric of Ariana's skirt, bringing her front and centre in front of the audience.

The popstrel went from confused to shocked after she was bent over by the back-up dancers and then spanked by Madonna.

Ariana threw her head back and laughter and covered her mouth as she snapped back up.

Afterwards, the pair sauntered down the aisle hand-in-hand until they reached the end of the stage, where Ariana danced and blew a kiss to Madonna.

'Ladies and gentleman,' Madonna chimed in, 'a big round of applause for tonight's Unapologetic Bitch, the one and only Ariana Grande!'

She then joked to her guest, 'Do you get confused for coffee sometimes?'

'Soy latte,' Ariana responded.

Madonna continued as she held Ariana's hand, 'Any ways, I am so happy to see you! We have got to stop meeting like this.'

The Bang Bang singer, who has previously cited Madonna as an idol, looked beyond star-struck as she covered her face after embracing the star.

'Any ways, everybody knows that the Unapologetic Bitch of the evening gets a prize, right? And why should you be any exception?' The Like A Virgin singer asked, plucking stray strands of hair off of Ariana's black dress.

'Get your split ends off here,' Madonna said, clearly embarrassing the younger star.

'You've got to learn to face the audience girl, come out here,' Madonna instructed, holding her by the arm as she inspected her. 'I'm just checking out your outfit!', the Grammy-award winning singer assured her.

'She's got a Rebel Heart tattoo also!' Madonna announced before adding, 'I don't think I spanked you hard enough!'

Ariana looked terrified as Madonna huddled towards her back-up dancers for her prize, before wielding a banana.

The shock factor continued as Madonna began discussing the prize with Ariana.

'There is so much you can do with a banana,' Madonna told the actress and singer.

'What have you done with a banana?' Madonna asked.

'I've eaten them,' Grande replied, much to the audience's delight. 'I have frozen them. I've chopped them up.'

The talk then turned a bit more sexual in nature but Grande was a good sport and had the audience cheering and laughing with her responses.

The banana and spanking combo pack was also gifted to Katy Perry when she hopped on stage with Madonna in Los Angeles this past October and Perry's ex Diplo when he appeared on the first night of the tour in Montreal last September.

Jessica Chastain on the other hand switched things up when she appeared with Madonna by spanking the singer instead last November in Prague.

Even non-celebrities who join Madonna on stage get a banana, and occasionally a spanking too.

Grande, as is polite, wrote Madonna to thank her for the gift using her Instagram where she posted a video of the two and wrote; 'I am dead. @madonna thank you for the spanking & the banana. #rebelheart #forever #unapologeticbitches.'

Madonna meanwhile appears to be just as enamored with Grande, as she too posted to Instagram, writing; 'Kewtest Unapologetic Bitch EVER!! Thanks Ariana!!! Tonight was so much FUN! Miami show #rebelhearttour'.

The hit-maker has been slammed for starting her concerts late, but on Sunday she arrived on time for her performance.

Meanwhile, Madonna is no doubt glad for the break as she deals with her contentious custody battle with ex-husband Guy Ritchie.

Their son Rocco has been staying with Guy in London, with his parents set to go to court to reach an agreement over his living arrangements, according to reports.

The battle began in December when the teenager refused to return to New York despite a Manhattan judge's court order.

Madonna appeared in court in New York on December 23 after Rocco refused to come home for the holidays, and the judge ordered him to return to his mother so she and Guy could work out custody.

However, Rocco has so far refused to return to the US.

The former couple will next appear in court on February 3 in New York City.
