HRD Minister Smriti Irani says Gandhis have betrayed Amethi for three decades

Terming Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi a ‘liar’, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Sunday said that the Gandhi family has been betraying the people of Amethi for the past three decades.

Smriti, who was on a one-day visit to Amethi, said: “Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not a liar but Rahul Gandhi is. Since the formation of our government, Modiji is gradually fulfilling his promises that he made for the development of this country”.

Attacking the Gandhi family further, the minister alleged that the farmers of Amethi have been duped by them.

“Over 65 acres of land was acquired about 30 years ago for setting up the Samrat bicycle factory. The deed was for 90 years but the land was transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in February this year,” Smriti alleged while showing some papers.

“This shows who is a liar,” she added.

Taking a jibe at Rahul’s recent ‘kurta pyjama’ remarks, Smriti said the Congress leader and his party was disturbed as his victory margin was reduced by well over 80 per cent in the Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress vice-president had recently promised to replace the suit-boot ki sarkar with a kurta pyjama sarkar, asking people to bring the Congress back to power during a visit to Amethi.

“It is not in our culture to make such comments. We believe in working for the progress and development of our people and our work reflects it,” she said.

“Reading out a 1.5 minute address and talking about suit-boot is easy, but why does he shy away from open debate? If he can debate for one and a half hour, it will come to fore who is right and who is wrong,” Smriti added.

“Three generations of the Nehru-Gandhi family have been promising a railway line in Amethi. The budget for a railway line from Sultanpur — Amethi — Unchahar has been accepted in the last rail budget and work will start soon,” she said.

“I will keep coming to Amethi frequently and our actions will speak rather than our words. The people of Amethi are intelligent enough to distinguish between the ‘speaker’ and the ‘worker’,” she added.
