A present for his Starman! Michael C. Hall reveals David Bowie gave him 'artifact from his past' for appearing in musical Lazarus
Michael C. Hall has revealed late rock icon David Bowie gave him an 'artifact from his past' he now treasures 'like a talisman' on the opening night of his musical Lazarus.
The actor has just finished a run filling the pop king's shoes in the off-Broadway play, which is a sequel to the singer's 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth and features new songs by the Starman favourite.
Michael, 44, said the music legend, who died earlier this month after a secret battle with cancer, went out of his way to put him at ease.
Talisman : Michael C Hall said David Bowie gave him an 'artifact from his past' on opening night for starring in his musical Lazarus
The Dexter star told The Guardian the generous musician sent him a 'a very, very amazing gift and note' on opening night for the play, which is staged at The New York Theater Workshop.
'Out of respect for his intense privacy I’ll just say that it was an artifact from his past that he had passed on to me,' said Michael.
'And it will be a talisman to me for the rest of my life.'
He also said he found out about the glam rocker's death when he woke up to 25 or 30 texts on his phone, and said it felt like 'an internal fist clench.'
The versatile actor plays alien Thomas Newton in the musical. Bowie played the role in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell To Earth, and also co-wrote the musical and new songs for the show, which has been a hit since previews began in November.
The Six Feet Under actor admitted he was extremely nervous when meeting Bowie for the first time, when the Ziggy Stardust star asked him to perform for him.

He said: ''I felt the butterflies start turning to bats,' and that the Thin White Duke said 'Now sing my songs for me,' he said of their first meeting.
As Michael began singing Where Are We Now?, Bowie joined in with harmonies from the sidelines.
The actor said: 'I thought: "OK, this is it. I have nothing left to fear."
'And that was an amazing day. I kept it together, but when he left, I was alone in the apartment and my legs went out, and I sort of fell to the floor. I’ve never met someone for whom I had such reverence.'

Icon: David Bowie in his final music video, also called Lazarus, which was released just days before his death
Bowie died on January 10 at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer, which he kept secret from fans.
His death made tickets more desired, with a single matinee seat going last Tuesday for $1,900 on StubHub.
The show Lazarus is inspired by Walter Tevis' 1963 novel, The Man Who Fell to Earth, which was made into a Nicholas Roeg film starring Bowie in 1976.
Michael has returned to his theater roots since wrapping up as serial killer Dexter in 2013.
He recently portrayed the title character in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and starred in Will Eno's Broadway production of The Realistic Jones.
The actor is currently at Sundance Film Festival with his new film Christine, based on 1970s news anchor Christine Chubbuck, who infamously shot herself live on-air.
