Leonardo DiCaprio's incredible winning streak continued at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in LA on Saturday night.

The 41-year-old won best male actor in a motion picture for his role in The Revenant. It was his fifth individual nomination, but first ever win.

He had been up against Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), and Johnny Depp (Black Mass).

However, on Saturday night The Revenant lost out to newspaper drama Spotlight in the top category, best film.

During his acceptance speech, Leo said: 'I'm truly humbled by this because it comes from all of you, my fellow actors. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,' the actor said of his first win at the SAG Awards.

He continued: 'When I was 15 years old, I was lucky enough to get a film called This Boy's Life and for about a year after that I watched as many films as I possibly could from Jimmy Cagney all the way to Robert De Niro,

'It gave me such a tremendous respect for this craft, this craft of acting. I was in awe of their performances, and I was incredibly inspired. So for any young actors out there, I encourage you to watch the history of cinema because as the history of cinema unfolds, you realize that we all stand on the shoulders of giants.'

Leo paid tribute to the cast and crew of The Revenant and also thanked his parents.

'To my parents, thank you for listening to an overly ambitious, slightly annoying 13-year-old kid who wanted to go on auditions every day after school,' he said.

'I would not be standing here without you.'

Leo celebrated his win with a hug from his Titanic co-star Kate Winslet, who had been nominated for best actress for her role in Steve Jobs. (She lost out to The Danish Girl's Alicia Vikander).

The pair have remained close since their 1997 blockbuster film and Winslet had earlier revealed she's been DiCaprio's biggest supporter this awards season.

She said she'd be 'so focused on Leo and him winning everything' that her own Golden Globes victory came as a shock earlier this month.

The admiration is certainly mutual, with Leo previously describing her as his 'favourite actress in the industry'.

Leo's win adds momentum to Leo's push for his first Academy Award. Many believe it is his year after his tour de force in The Revenant. And with the Oscars not far off he is expected to finally take home gold after nearly two decades in the business.

DiCaprio has already won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice honour this season.

Elsewhere, Brie Larson, the star of the captive mother-son daughter drama Room, won best actress at the SAGs.

Best supporting actor went to Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation.

Elba was one of the most notable black actors overlooked by the Academy Awards, which instead fielded all-white acting nominees.

The SAG Awards, conversely, crowded its Shrine Auditorium stage in Los Angeles with a diverse group of winners including Queen Latifah and Viola Davis.
