'How can you not sing along?' Fans rave about Grease: Live! and heap praise on the stars... despite audio glitches during the Fox musical event

It was two thumbs up for Fox's ambitious Grease: Live! production on Sunday with viewers taking to social media to praise the performances, relive their memories and generally share their enjoyment of a good old-fashioned singalong.

Fans gushed about how much Julianne Hough, who played Sandy, looked just like Olivia Newton-John who starred in the film version with John Travolta.

And others praised the professionalism and talent of Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo who insisted the show go on even though her father passed away hours earlier from cancer.

Singalong: Fans took to Twitter during the live telecast to express their delight at the Fox musical production that revived the hit 1978 movie on the small screen

There was praise for Aaron Tveit as Danny, too, and plenty of interest in his ability to master the pelvic thrusts required for the role of Rydell High's bad boy.

There was a lot of talk as well about how his hair stood perfectly up on end throughout the whole three hour performance.

Just about everyone agreed the technical crew did an amazing job, leaving viewers wondering how they managed to change the color of the car during Greased Lightning, and how they pulled of the car racing scene at the end.

The live show wasn't without a few glitches though.

There were plenty of people who took to social media to complain about the quality of the audio that seemed crackly and that, at one point, dropped out altogether for about 30 seconds during the performance of Hand Jive.

The show's Twitter team immediately tweeted: 'We're live.... sometimes you lose sound!'

They later tweeted they were trying to fix the issue so that it would sound better in the West Coast re-broadcast, that wasn't of course actually live.

Some complained that the broadcast jumped around, going back to previous scenes and cutting off to commercials halfway through a musical number.

And some moaned they couldn't hear some of the songs and dialogue because of the reaction of the live studio audience.

The critics, too, generally approved of what Fox managed to pull off and agreed that they'd raised the bar for live musicals on TV.

NBC started the trend with live telecasts of The Sound Of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz! but Grease: Live! took the concept to a whole new level.

The Hollywood Reporter said in its review: 'NBC has made a winter tradition of live theater that, at its best, feels like it's live theater, but Grease: Live showed if you have that desired vision, live television needn't have any barriers.'

The production 'upped the standard for all live TV musicals from here on out,' said TV Guide.

'The show successfully managed to combine all the nostalgic elements of Grease that everyone expected while creating a new experience,' the review stated. 'This wasn't a show - it was a spectacle and the applause was very much deserved.'
