An album of rejects! Sia reveals the singing sensations that knocked back her tracks... and why she is glad they did

For years this Australian hitmaker's songs have been sung along too, cried with and caused impromptu interpretative dance sessions in living rooms across with world.

However, it is only recently that those big hits have been sung by the star rather than some of the decade's biggest musicians.

Being a songwriter can come with many perks but it can also come with the heartbreak of having your songs rejected, unless you are Sia, as the 40-year-old told Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday she's fine with hearing the words 'no'.

The Australian song writer turned chart topper sat down with Ellen to talk about her new album, This Is Acting, which she said is filled with 'rejects'.

And she is not lying, every track on the CD - which was released Friday - was a song that the Sia wrote for another star.

Performing her latest single, Bird Set Free, the 40-year-old told the host that the emotional track was rejected three times.

Speaking of Bird Set Free, the star told Ellen: 'That one I wrote and I loved it, and I wrote it for Pitch Perfect 2 but they ended up taking a song called Flashlight so then I pitched it to Rihanna and Rihanna took that one [before rejecting it].

'But then Adele heard it and Adele it cut but then Adele gave it back to me and I was grateful because I had had seller's remorse.

'So that's one of those happy endings.'

Adele actually did her fair share of rejecting also deciding against Alive, which has been enormously successful for Sia.

Sia famously wrote Rihanna's mega hit Diamonds, but the Barbadian beauty did not want track Reaper, which seemed so destined for her new album Anti that it was produced by Kanye West.

But their loss is Sia's - whose full name is Sia Furler - gain as now she has her seventh album.

'This is just a bit of fun [it's] all the things we had lying around.

'It's like when you have a whole lot of things lying in the fridge about to go off but then you're such a good chef that you whip up something totally delicious out of it.'

Speaking of a bit of fun, Ellen decided to update Sia's on-stage look of a face obscuring black and white wig with a long blonde one with giant pink bow.

The wig was so long that the 58-year-old host told Sia she could wear it and not have to wear pants.
