The Duchess of Cambridge has given her first solo television interview for a programme marking the Queen's life and reign.

Kate, who's voice has rarely been captured on camera during all her years in the public eye, took part ahead of Her Majesty's landmark birthday this year.

The 33-year-old joined other senior royals in paying tribute to the monarch for an ITV programme, due to be screened in the spring to celebrate her 90th.

The Duchess was last interviewed on television by broadcaster Tom Bradby in November 2010, on the day her engagement to Prince William was announced.

Although her then fiancé did most of the talking, Kate was most animated when she spoke about her family.

'They've been great over the years - helping me with difficult times,' she revealed. 'We see a lot of each other and they are very, very dear to me.'

With William by her side Kate gave an assured performance even then. And now she's far more experienced in front of the camera, having made charity videos and taken part in many royal events at home and abroad.

The film, which has the working title The Queen At Ninety, also includes contributions from many key figures in the Queen's life, including the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William, along with other national and international figures.

Film crews were given access to the Queen as she worked last year and to other members of the monarchy.

Nick Kent, an executive producer from Oxford Film and Television which is making the two-hour programme, said: 'We've been fortunate to have the participation of so many members of the Royal Family to mark this historic milestone in the life of the Queen.

'It's a remarkable story of an extraordinary life which in so many ways reflects the changing face of the nation.'

Keep it classy in Kate's navy dress

Kate Middleton is what we'd like to call an absolutely timeless beauty, no wonder Caitlyn Jenner copied her look.

Whether she's donning a houndstooth dress, rock climbing gear or a sultry silk wrap dress, Kate's always got the class.

Her gorgeous blue dress she's wearing here is by Issa Phylis and the great news is you can click right to get the exact dress...for a pretty penny that is.

Jo Clinton-Davis, ITV's controller of factual, who co-commissioned the programme, said: 'As she reaches her 90th birthday, this film aims to offer a fresh insight into our monarch's life and work.'

The Queen's 90th will be marked with a weekend of national celebrations around the time of her official birthday in June, and with other events to mark the day she was born, April 21 1926.

ITV also announced that Ant and Dec will host The Queen's 90th Birthday Celebration, a horse-themed event, to be broadcast live in May telling the story of the Queen's life.

The Queen will attend the event hosted by the Royal Windsor Horse Show in the private grounds of Windsor Castle.

Faces from the world of entertainment will take to the stage and in the arena the audience will watch performances from a range of organisations including the Oman Royal Cavalry, New Zealand Army Band, the Mounties and The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

As well as the events planned to mark her milestone birthday, another significant plan for the year ahead will see the Queen hand over some of her patronages to younger royals as she scales back her royal duties.

Kate is expected to become patron of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, which hosts the Wimbledon championships, after Her Majesty enjoyed 64 years in the role.

Meanwhile, sources suggest Prince Harry, 31, is poised to take over as patron of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) who governs English rugby, a title that the Queen has held for 65 years.

Additionally, it has been rumoured that Prince William, 33, will take over as patron of the Football Association, while the Countess of Wessex will also share the load with a major new role.

The Queen is not alone in passing on responsibility as she enters her tenth decade; Prince Philip recently stepped down as patron of the Air Training Corps, passing the title onto the Duchess of Cambridge.

However, the 94-year-old continues his work with 780 charities and organisations.
