'No one invited me!' Melissa McCarthy reveals she wasn't asked to return for Gilmore Girls revival

Excitement for the newly announced Gilmore Girls revival quickly turned to panic as many realized that Melissa McCarthy - who played the beloved Sookie St. James - wasn't on the list of confirmed returning cast members.

Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told TV Line that she would love to add in a part for the Mike & Molly star if her schedule opened up, but the 45-year-old was then spotted on Twitter telling a fan that she hadn't been invited in the first place.

Responding to a concerned fan, Melissa seemed disheartened to be the bearer of bad news as she revealed that 'no one asked' her to return for the highly anticipated Netflix revival.

A fan tweeted the Spy star following the revival news, begging: 'PUH-LEEZ come back to Stars Hollow!! #gilmoregirlsrevival.'

Melissa quickly responded: 'Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!'

Just the day before series creator Amy had spoken with TV Line about the revival, seemingly suggesting that she had spoken with Melissa's team and the star was too busy.

When asked about Melissa returning to the revival to reprise the role of Sookie, she explained: 'She’s really f***ing busy.'

Busy schedule aside, Amy said she left word with Melissa's team to let her know if she has a free moment, because she'd be happy to 'write her a scene.'

Amy added: 'Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over - even if for just a cameo - we would be totally game.'

She insisted that with Melissa's crazy schedule - which includes working on Paul Feig's upcoming Ghostbusters reboot - she couldn't plan for including Sookie in the show's new story lines.

Is there still hope? Despite the confusion, perhaps Melissa's tweet will end up getting a cameo for Sookie after all (pictured with co-star Lauren Graham in a 2006 episode)

'It was a character we knew we could not count on in terms of story, because [Melissa] just simply wouldn’t have that sort of time to carve out for us,' she reasoned.

Amy noted that if she had to depend on the Bridesmaids star's schedule for taping she 'would just be sobbing in a corner for six months.'

However, Amy did say that 'if her people called me up and said she’s free on these particular days... we would put her right in,' so perhaps Melissa's tweet will open up the opportunity of a return to Stars Hollow for Sookie after all.

According to E! News, Gilmore Girls is set to return as a four-part miniseries on Netflix, with Amy and Daniel Palladino executive producing, writing, and directing.

So far Lauren Graham (Lorelai), Alexis Bledel (Rory), Scott Patterson (Luke), Kelly Bishop (Emily), Sean Gunn (Kirk), and Keiko Agena (Lane) have signed on to return.

Meanwhile, Melissa has been working on upcoming comedy The Boss - which she wrote alongside her husband Ben Falcone and Steve Mallory - due out in April.

She will also appear alongside Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in the upcoming, highly anticipated Ghostbusters reboot, which is set to hit theaters in July.
