A casual Kate Winslet smiles and waves as she arrives at Jimmy Kimmel Live! decked out in black from top to toe

Many stars go for a little black dress when they appear on the late night chat shows.

Kate Winslet opted for the colour when she arrived at ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! studios in Hollywood on Monday afternoon.

But the 40-year-old actress kept her costume, which was being carried in a garment bag by an assistant, under wraps.

She turned up in a  black round-neck sweater and black baggy trousers that tapered off to a skinny fit that she tucked into her black suede ankle bootees.

The beautiful blonde left her hair loose to cascade around her shoulders and she didn't appear to be wearing much in the way of make-up beyond pink lipstick.

She slung a large black tote over her shoulder and wore her cell phone on a long strap across her body and waved at fans before entering the studio.

The actress was due to appear with actor Richard Dreyfuss while band Old Dominion was the show's music guest.

Kate was probably on the show to talk about her upcoming movie, Triple 9, due out February 26.

She stars with Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the action film about a gang of criminals and corrupt cops who plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off their biggest heist ever.

Kate flew into Los Angeles from London on Friday night for the Screen Actors Guild awards the following day.

The star was nominated for Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role for her turn in Steve Jobs but lost out to Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl.

However, she did have the pleasure of sitting next to her old friend and Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, who won the Best Actor award for The Revenant.
