Chancellor George Osborne has repeatedly clashed with lenders over his decision to impose an 8 per cent surcharge on their UK profits, on top of corporation tax. The move, which was announced during the emergency Budget in July and came into force last month, has incensed executives at many firms.
Baffled by those ever more complex internet and phone offers? Don't worry, confusing ads may soon be...BroadBANNED!
Millions of household bill-payers are routinely bamboozled by 'confusion pricing' used to promote broadband deals. But media watchdogs are gearing up to scrap the practice. Burying landline rental fees in contract small print often baffles customers, according to new research. Self-employed audio transcriber Lisette Davidson (pictured) is reluctant to switch broadband provider because she feels the process of comparing deals is deliberately puzzling.

GATWICK AIRPORT BOSS: If we choose growth at Gatwick over inertia at Heathrow, 2016 can be year Britain finally solves one of its longest running policy challenges
For the first time, and after decades of delays and dead ends, there is now a deliverable alternative to the UK's air capacity question, says Stewart Wingate. The Government delayed its decision on expansion in December, showing once again that Heathrow is still dogged by the environmental problems that have stalled its plans time and again over the past four decades.

MIDAS SHARE TIPS: Penna Consulting's on the march...as it helps firms hire and fire staff
The company made its name as an adviser to firms with big redundancy programmes, helping staff to find other jobs or, at the very least, leave with dignity. Over the past two to three years, however, it has branched into specialised recruitment and training. It is also helping the Metropolitan Police create a more ethnically diverse workforce.

£12BILLION... The slump in profits from the taxpayer bailout of the banks in just seven months
Chancellor George Osborne claimed in June that the Treasury's original stakes in RBS, Lloyds, Northern Rock and others were set to yield a £14 billion profit, according to an analysis carried out for it by investment bank Rothschild. Calculations based on those figures show that the profit has crashed to less than £2 billion after a collapse in the share prices of RBS and Lloyds.
From the catwalk straight into stores: Burberry closes 'gap between runway and retail' and launches 'seasonless' collections
Global luxury fashion brands usually present their collections half a year before they reach the shops, but Burberry today said its clothes and accessories will be available in-store straight after the show starting from September 2016. Burberry will change the way 'it creates, presents and sells its runway collections', reflecting changes in the way consumers engage with brands on the internet - a move that could see other fashion labels follow suit.

The Great Tax Switch: Fury as small firms' rates burden soars - far outstripping other taxes - and corporation tax take falls by billions
Small and medium-sized companies are struggling to survive under the burden of a huge rise in business rates while the Treasury's income from corporation tax has fallen, according to the Confederation of British Industry. The organisation representing bosses has urged Chancellor George Osborne to reform business rates in his imminent Budget - due in just over a month's time - and has called on him to scrap the tax altogether for more than a million small firms.
Couples say 'I do' to setting up shop online: Notonthehighstreet sees 38 per cent rise in couples selling through it in past year
City-based Julia and Ed Minton joined the site in May 2015. They met at school and today they run Musubi London, a small business selling colourful Japanese furoshiki - cloths that can be used for wrapping objects such as lunch boxes and gifts. Meanwhile, David and Rebecca Cahill Roots set up Betty Etiquette, a stationery business in Lewisham, South-East London, in May 2014.
When will interest rates rise? Bank's lone wolf ends his hike calls, as outlook for a rise drifts to 2017
Interest rates are set to remain at their record lows well into 2017, commentators suggested after the Bank of England held rates by a vote of 9-0 and lowered its growth forecasts. The quarterly inflation report said that outlook for global growth had weakened further since the previous report in November and that the latest data suggest a softer picture for UK activity in 2015 than previously assumed.
Glimmer of hope for 550,000 expats on frozen state pensions: Retirees penalised by 'lottery' rules resting on where they move
More than half of the one million pensioners living abroad don't receive annual increases in their state payouts. That means someone who retired when the basic rate was £67.50 a week in 2000 would still get that, rather than the £115.95 now received by everyone else. But whether an expat's pension is frozen or not depends entirely on where they move to, because the Government has struck individual deals with some countries but left around 150 others out in the cold.
Britain's best savers revealed: Londoners put away over £1,000 a month - four times as much as those in the North East
Savers in Wales take second spot in the savings rankings, with £671 per person being put away each month - though this is just over half of what savers in London put away. Regular savers in Wales and Yorkshire and Humber are outdoing those in the South East as a whole, the survey from challenger bank Charter Savings Bank revealed.
Owners rush to cash in on properties' rising values, but what's the best way to release equity and fund home improvements?
A rush of homeowners are cashing in some of their property's value to fund extensions and home improvements rather than move house, experts suggest. But while the sums taken out may be relatively small compared to the value of properties, working out the best way to do it is still vitally important. We take a look at the options available to borrowers.

A median priced property is now no longer affordable for median-earning solo buyers in 95 per cent of local authorities across England and Wales, Savills says.

Where in London could a buy-to-let investment pay off most? Get a street-level view of average rental returns from our interactive map
