'The biggest surprise!' CBS confirms The Good Wife will end after this season with announcement in Super Bowl advert

It was rumoured the hit drama would not return for an eighth season.   

And the speculation was confirmed that The Good Wife was coming to an end during a Super Bowl commercial.

The eventful match saw Peyton Manning's Denver Broncos win with a 24-10 victory over Cam Newton's Carolina Panthers. 

'Seven seasons, hundreds of twists... but the biggest Good Wife surprise yet,' the advert teased during Sunday's big game.

The short video cuts to a clip in which the show's star, Julianna Margulies can be seen nervously catching her breath amidst a flurry of flashing cameras.

The CBS network decided not to renew the show after it was announced creators, Robert and Michelle King would not return as showrunners. 

 Margulies, who has played Chicago state attorney Alicia Florrick for seven seasons, hinted at the programme's finale last month.

The 49-year-old Golden Globe winner was attending the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards and gave a pretty strong indication she may be leaving the show.

When she took to the podium and explained why she was at the event, she said she was supporting the Kings, as reported by Vulture.

'I surprised Robert and Michelle tonight,' Julianna said. 'They didn't know I was going to be here.'

'They think I’m here for them, but I’m unemployed come April, and I think you haven’t seen me in a while, at least not in person, so I thought I should show up.'

The fate of the legal and political drama series has been in question since Robert and Michelle announced they would be leaving after the end of season six.

The Good Wife first aired in September 2009 and will air the final nine episodes beginning February 14 and will conclude May 8. 

Fans were predictably upset about the end of the show, and took to Twitter to voice their dismay the much loved program was finishing.

One devastated viewer tweeted: 'omggg the good wife us ending after this season' with crying face emoticons.

Another said: '#TheGoodWife news is killing my #SuperBowl buzz. Counting on Bey and Bruno to bring it back.'

There was also the comment: 'CBS canceling #The GoodWife with a #SuperBowl ad is pretty ironic given the fan base hatred for football games delaying the show so much.'

Meanwhile some came up with funny memes - showing Coldplay apparently crying over the end of the series.
