Milla Jovovich admits 'eating like a giant' caused her to gain 75lbs during her first pregnancy - and inspired her to keep a public 'food diary' the second time around

  • The 39-year-old actress gained only 30lbs during her second pregnancy, after making the decision to stay healthy and active until she gave birth
  • Milla, who gave birth to her second child in April, will start filming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in August for which she needs to be in top shape

Model and actress Milla Jovovich, who gave birth to her second daughter last month, has revealed that when it came to weight gain she let herself go during the first two trimesters of her second pregnancy, because she was so physically ill she was left bed-ridden for much of that time.

The 39-year-old and her husband Paul W.S. Anderson welcomed their baby girl Dashiel Edan on April 1. But before she gave birth, Milla, who also has a seven-year-old daughter Ever Gabo, explained to parenting blog Romy and the Bunnies - that she vowed to change her lifestyle in the midst of her second pregnancy because she realized she had already reached the recommended amount of weight gain - months before her due date.

'I definitely tried to watch what I ate during the week, but not much,' she said. 'Of course I gained a lot of weight and I found myself at the 30lb maximum around New Years and I still had three more months to go before the baby would be born.'

Ten weeks before her due date, Milla challenged herself to do 12,000 steps a day while maintaining a healthy diet.

'I thought it would be fun and also helpful to post a “food diary” on my Facebook page because going “public” with something makes it that much harder to get lazy,' she noted. 'Now it wasn’t just about me making random promises to myself, but about me putting my reputation on the line with my fans.'

While Milla wasn't looking to lose any weight, she wanted to make sure that she and her baby were as healthy as possible leading up to her delivery.

The actress also knew she needed to keep as fit and active as possible, in order to be ready to start filming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in August, so putting on 75lbs like she did during her first pregnancy was not an option.

'Everything I ate suddenly made me gain loads of weight,' she recalled about her first pregnancy. 'I was taking down six eggs, with bacon and toast in one sitting. And that was just breakfast! It was like I was eating like the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk.'

Milla noted that she thought she was having a boy the second time around because of how vastly different her two pregnancies were. Despite her weight gain, she felt relatively normal while carrying Ever. But for her second pregnancy she found herself feeling dizzy, like she was going to faint or throw up, 'at least once every hour'.

And while Milla was in physical agony, her daughter Ever thought it was 'really cool' that she was able to watch TV all day, so she began imitating her mother by complaining about 'being nauseous' while she was in school.

When it came to her pregnancy wardrobe, Milla said she bought a 'bunch of loose, flowing things' from Free People because maternity clothes give her 'the creeps', although she did confess to buying a few pairs of pregnancy jeans when she got bigger.

Milla, who was born in Kiev, Ukraine, also spoke passionately about being in the moment when she is with her family, explaining that she finds the 'Western way of raising kids' to be 'disconnected'.

She added that she and her husband have been co-sleeping with Ever for years, noting that she believes it helps them stay connected as a family

'I’ve always been inspired by mothers in Third World countries,' she said. 'I feel that the connection with children and mothers is so strong in places where there are not so many “things” to get in the way.'

Since the birth of her daughter on April 1, Milla has been documenting Dashiel's first moments by sharing heartwarming family pictures on her Instagram account.

Last month, Milla posted a precious photo of Dashiel sleeping on top of her chest, writing: 'Dashiel is two weeks old today and I still haven't gotten out of my pj's! That's what it is to be a milk manufacturing facility #twoweeksold #proudtobeawoman #nursingmybaby #mamabear #ladiary [sic].'
