In most situations, it pays to be polite but a bad attitude at an airport can be especially costly, according to staff who have revealed what really goes on behind the scenes.

From giving wrong directions to travellers who are already late to laughing at what people have in their carry-on luggage, airport staff have spilled the beans on life in the luggage hall.

Check-in agents, security officers and coffee shop baristas, have taken to anonymous confessions app Whisper, to share their shocking secrets.

While it may not occur at every airport, a number of staff have admitted to taking pleasure in purposely misleading, getting revenge on and overcharging people who are rude.

Many passengers will wear an extra jacket or hide their shoes in their pockets to avoid excess luggage fees, but personal items may not be the reason they're being charged for an overweight bag.

One anonymous post said: 'I work as a check in agent at the airport. Sometimes I press my knee on the weighing scales so I could charge more excess kilos on rude passengers.'

Another revealed: 'I work in the airport and I love to give wrong directions to people who are already late.'
