She is known among her fans for singing What I Can Do For You.

And Sheryl Crow put her money where her mouth is when she handed over cash to her hometown high school's teachers during an emotional visit in Kennett, Missouri.

The 53-year-old teacher-turned-hitmaker had a great time visiting her old stomping ground and giving money to educators to use as they see fit in the classroom.

The cheeky school principal fooled students and staff into believing they were gathering for a routine pep rally, which is when the class of 1980 alumna triumphantly emerged. 

As she handed over the $600 bounties for a Today show spot, she told pupils: 'I want everybody to give a big round of applause for your teachers.

'They spend their own money in making sure you have what you need in the classroom.

'Your teachers ... spend up to $600, maybe more, a year [in classroom supplies].'

Sheryl, who lived across the road from the esteemed establishment, then handed over the whopping cheques to the Kennett High School workers on behalf of Farmers Insurance and charity Adopt-A-Classroom. 

She also shared an hilarious yearbook image, where she is shown in her role as senior maid, which she explained meant she was 'always the bridesmaid, never the bride,' in terms of school honours.

Sheryl also said 'the long line of hairdos,' is really what yearbooks are good for.

Education is certainly a cause close to the performers heart, as she herself was an teacher before her music career took off.

The saucy starlet, whose mother and sisters also worked in the profession, said: 'When I got out of school, I went into teaching.  

'I loved it, but I had this burning desire to get my music heard.' 

And she thinks the work schools across the country carry out to educate young people deserves to be more widely appreciated, and said it was the inspiration of her teachers that drove her to success.

The musician said: 'I know these towns are all the way across America, that send kids out believing they can do whatever they want in this giant world. And I was really that kid.

Of course Sheryl's gamble seems to have paid off, as she has sold over 50 million albums worldwide and has released a string of hit singles.

In addition she has an agreeable estimated net worth of $40 million, and she lives with her two son on a 154-acre farm outside country music mecca Nashville, Tennessee.
