'Why is she barbecuing in February?' Mary Berry leaves viewers baffled after she cooks summer recipes outdoors - while Storm Imogen batters Britain

  • Mary Berry made summer-style recipes outdoors on her BBC2 show
  • She cooked burgers and chicken wings on a homemade barbecue
  • Viewers took to social media to say it was bad timing with Storm Imogen

Mary Berry has sparked a Twitter storm after cooking summer-themed food on a barbecue - as Storm Imogen reeks chaos across Britain.

The 80-year-old chef was seen making a stove out of a wheelbarrow and cooking lamb burgers outside on her BBC2 show Mary Berry's Foolproof Cooking last night.

But viewers took to Twitter to express their dismay at her choice of dish when 100mph winds are battering Britain - pointing out if they tried to have a barbecue 'it'd end up six streets away and upside down.'

Unfortunately, when the show was filmed producers wouldn't have be able to foresee that Storm Imogen would be causing schools, major roads and bridges to close and ferry services to be cancelled.

But Mary's recipes for marinated chicken wings and homemade burgers on the barbecue went down like a lead balloon with viewers on social media pointing out it wasn't the season for it.

Charlotte Sims questioned why Mary was making her 'favourite summer recipes for lazy days and outdoor entertaining. Have you seen the weather outside?!'

And Carrie Smith was equally bemused why the schedule hasn't looked at the weather forecast.

Twitter was confused by the recipes being so summery while Storm Imogen was hitting the coast of Britain and many thought the 'scheduler clearly didn't look at the weather forecast'

Nico Morgan found it equally absurd. He posted: 'Watching Mary Berry talking about barbecue food going down a storm. In February. In the middle of Imogen's wrath.'

@rocksolidhair wrote Mary was getting 'a little bit overexcited. If you tried to have a barbecue right now it'd end up six streets away upside down.'

While Stacey Le Page thought the timing was equally 'wrong.'

She wrote: 'It's force 10, Storm Imogen and raining and Mary Berry is telling me about summer foods and barbecue.'

James Reader joked: 'Why's Mary telling us how to barbecue now? What does she teach us in the summer? How to bake a Yule log?'

@JdotAdotKdotL posted although he loved Mary, 'why are the BBC showing her cooking on a BBQ in the middle of February' with an umbrella emoji.

Although the timing was unfortunate, many were also impressed by Mary creating a barbecue out of a wheelbarrow, using just bricks and a metal rack.

But Nicky Rose wrote: 'I'm sure you have enough dosh for a nice kettle BBQ. How silly.'

Although others called Mary a 'hipster' for her alternative method.

It's not the first time Mary has caused controversy, in last week's episode of the show she came under fire for her 'soggy bottom' while cooking a beef wellington, one of the biggest sins on the Great British Bake Off.

Storm Imogen, Britain's ninth named storm, yesterday left more than 13,500 homes without power across the South West and South Wales due to the extreme weather conditions.

A further 2,500 were without power in Devon and 1,000 in Gloucestershire.

The storm has caused major disruption to southern England, including to rail commuters who faced rush-hour chaos as they tried to make their way home this evening amid a barrage of cancellations and delays.

Trains in and out of London were disrupted due to the hurricane-force winds, while routes to Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth, Southampton, Gloucester and Cardiff were also affected.
