Lifting the veil: The fascinating pictures that show what life is REALLY like in Saudi Arabia, from nose-kissing to men who wear flowers on their heads
French photographer Eric Lafforgue discovered that it's hard to get into Saudi Arabia. To get a tourist visa you need sponsorship from a local travel agency or a company - and that this can be hard work because they make so much money from Mecca pilgrims that 'they are not interested in helping non-Muslims'. Then there are the rules. Women under 30 must be accompanied by their husband or brother and it is not permitted for an unmarried couple to travel alone together, Mr Lafforgue said. But Mr Lafforgue discovered that once inside, you're immersed in a world that's welcoming and wondrous in equal measures. These fascinating pictures, which he took on a 15-day trip in 2012, lift the veil on life in the Kingdom. Top left is a Somali girl, top right a tribesmen with flowers in his hair, bottom right is a rock formation in the desert, bottom left a shopping mall in Jeddah and inset, two Saudi men saying hello.

What's more, daredevil travellers often have to bring their own items to cover up the gaping holes (inset left).
