Vic uniform maker jobs under threat

As workers protested outside of a Melbourne factory in an attempt to will the federal government to save their jobs, the company they work for says no decision has yet been made on their future.

More than 80 workers protested outside Workwear Group's West Footscray factory on Thursday, and were joined by independent Senator Jacqui Lambie, calling on Defence Minister Kevin Andrews to overturn a decision to cancel its order for Australian Defence Force uniforms.

Textile Clothing and Footwear Union national secretary Michele O'Neil says without the order the plant will not survive, and it will have a flow-on effect on a number of other jobs in the defence uniform market.

In a statement, a Workwear Group spokeswoman said the company was reviewing the future of its facility amid challenging conditions and was liaising with staff and customers while assessing all options.

The company will announce its decision by May 14.
