Cvetan says it's unclear why McCarrel killed himself.

'We don't have any evidence to know the reason why he did it,' Cvetan said.

Authorities say nobody saw the shooting, but the man was seen on Statehouse grounds just before the gunshot.

McCarrel helped organize protests in Ohio after a Missouri cop shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in 2014. He also worked with Black Lives Matter, according to the New York Daily News.

McCarrel also founded an organization called Pursuing Our Dreams, which launched Feed the Streets, a project to help feed and nurture Ohio's homeless population.

He attended the NAACP’s Image Awards on Friday, according to the Pursuing Our Dreams Facebook page.

Earlier this year, McCarrel was named one of Radio One’s Hometown Champions for his community activism.

'He is selfless and will give his last in order to make sure others don't go without,' read a nomination page for the award. 'MarShawn has come so far in life and has inspired so many people to help others'

In 2014, McCarrel was quoted by 614 Columbus saying, 'all you need is love,' in a discussion about feeding the homeless for Feed the Streets.
