Tried for a sex crime... because I brushed past a film star in rush-hour: Artist, 51, accused of bizarre 'hit and run' assault on actress despite no evidence or witnesses - so why DID it come to trial?

Tried for sex crime... because I brushed past a film star in rush-hour

Mark Pearson, a 51-year-old artist, was on his way home from work, weaving through a thick tide of London commuters when he walked past a woman who later claimed he sexually assaulted her. This was followed, she insisted, by a violent blow to her left shoulder. Images of the moments before and after they passed were captured from CCTV and shown to a jury during Mr Pearson's three-day trial at Blackfriars Crown Court in London last week. Mr Pearson told the court: 'I would have had to crouch down, put my hand up the woman's skirt... penetrate her, take my hand out again... all while holding the newspaper and walking along the concourse... It's preposterous... It is against everything I believe in as a human being. I did nothing.' It came as little surprise to Mr Pearson - though he was profoundly relieved and grateful - when the jury of nine women and three men unanimously rejected the woman's story after deliberating for little more than 90 minutes.

Help For Heroes in shock charity probe: Breach of data 'drove soldier to verge of suicide' and 'bullied whistleblowers are paid for their silence'

Help For Heroes in shock charity probe: Charity Commission investigating claims that

Britain's biggest veterans' charity is being investigated amid claims it failed some of the heroes it cares for - leaving at least one soldier on the brink of suicide and another needing psychiatric care. The charity, supported by a host of famous names including Prince Harry, pictured left, is at the centre of an on-going ten-month probe by the Charity Commission. The charity has strongly denied bullying allegations, but at least seven employees are understood to have left their jobs and received pay-offs totalling £200,000 in the past four years, while Deborah Gildersleeves, pictured right, was offered a financial settlement to drop an unfair dismissal claim against the charity last April. Help for Heroes, which has raised more than £230 million and supported thousands of veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq, denies any failings.

'The cash rolled in - but as charity grew and grew, it just lost its focus': comment by TIM COLLINS, who led British troops in Iraq

As Help for Heroes became bigger and bigger, its focus blurred. It became clear there had been no thought given as to where ultimately the charity would go, writes TIM COLLINS.

A world divided: Violent clashes break out across the globe as thousands take to the streets for anti-Islam protests organised by far-right group PEGIDA in Britain, Europe and even Australia

PEGIDA take to the streets in anti-Islam protests across the globe

Violent scuffles broke out across Europe today as thousands of people taking part in far-right anti-Islam protests clashed with pro-immigration groups and riot control police. Police in Dresden, Germany, saw about 2,000 protesters at a rally organised by the group Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West, making it the biggest of a coordinated series of demonstrations across European cities. Known by its German acronym PEGIDA, the group emerged in Dresden two years ago and has become a magnet for far-right and anti-immigrant sentiment. Nationalist groups in Europe have been galvanized by the unprecedented influx of refugees from Africa, Asia and the Middle East last year. Today similar, smaller PEGIDA-style protests were planned in France, Britain, Poland, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Pictured is anti-fascist protestors in Amsterdam (left) and PEGIDA rallies in England (bottom right) and Ireland (top right).

As our aerial pictures show (main image), the camp on the edge of the French port has expanded beyond recognition in six months. Last summer (pictured inset) it was home to about 3,000 people awaiting their chance of a new life across the Channel in the UK. Framed by a motorway, scrubland and the sea, the settlement appears to be inching closer to land near homes on the shoreline as it demands ever-more space. Now its population, made up of 22 nationalities, edges towards 7,000.

Lord Lucan DID get away, says his brother: After 42-year family silence, Hugh Bingham 'ghosts' explosive autobiography of missing aristocrat to prove how he vanished

Lord Lucan's brother: He DID get away - and I've 'ghosted' his autobiography to show how:

For nearly 42 years, those closest to the disgraced Lord 'Lucky' Lucan (pictured left and right, ringed) have maintained a strict code of silence about the fate of the louche aristocrat who disappeared in 1974 after the brutal murder of his children's nanny, Sandra Rivett, at the family home in Belgravia, London. Now, in the wake of last week's High Court ruling that finally pronounced the missing playboy officially dead, Lord Lucan's younger brother, Hugh Bingham (pictured inset and right as a child), has broken the family oath of 'omerta' to speak for the first time in detail about Britain's most sensational unsolved murder case. In a series of remarkable interviews carried out by The Mail on Sunday over a period of two years, Bingham - the first member of Lucan's inner circle ever to speak out - reveals that he believed his brother (pictured below with Bingham as children) was an innocent man who fled with the help of wealthy friends because he had no prospect of a fair trial, and was running scared of violent gangsters chasing unpaid gambling debts.

The TV map of Britain: Graphic designer creates image of UK showing where all your favourite shows are set or filmed

New map of Britain shows where all our favourite TV shows were filmed

When Tim Ritz was asked by his wife, Kolleen, where Hastings, the setting for ITV's 1940s drama Foyle's War was, he drew a map on a post-it note. But as the geography questions kept coming Tim, when asked where Downton Abbey and then Pride and Prejudice were set, decided he wanted to do something more than a basic sketch. After much research he produced this detailed map covering everything from current drama successes like the BBC's Poldark, to the quirky 1990s comedy of Father Ted, to the decades old Fawlty Towers. To source the map he scoured the film information site IMDB as well as Google Maps, Wikipedia and consulted a graduate in the field.
