'Brooklyn Beckham wants to be a photographer': Sir Elton John defends Burberry's decision to hire his godson after it was blasted as 'sheer nepotism'

  • Brooklyn, 16, shot photos for Burberry's This Is Brit fragrance in London
  • Commentators said he'd never have got job if it wasn't for famous family
  • Sir Elton says it was a really clever idea, which achieved so much publicity

Most teenagers could at most dream of an internship at a fashion house where the biggest task they would be entrusted with would be making the tea.

So when Brooklyn Beckham, 16, stepped behind the lens this weekend to shoot Burberry's latest social media campaign, it understandably led commentators to question how the teenager managed to land such a prestigious role.

Fashion fans and professional photographers alike took to Twitter to express their unhappiness, claiming 'nepotism' was at play.

However, Sir Elton John has defended Burberry's decision to have his godson Brooklyn Beckham photograph its new campaign.

The 68-year-old music icon believes it was a really clever idea to hire Brooklyn because it achieved so much publicity.

Speaking to the Metro newspaper, He explained: 'How much publicity are Burberry getting out of it? That's the whole point. It's like when you do a runway show and you send all the great stuff down that doesn't make it to the shops but it gets in the papers - it's the publicity.'

And Brooklyn isn't the first member of the famous family to work for the fashion house as his younger brother Romeo, 13, was also used for its Christmas campaign two years ago.

He added: 'Brooklyn wants to be a photographer - Romeo modelled for them, so Brooklyn might as well take the photographs.'

Meanwhile, Brooklyn - who is the eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham - sparked controversy two weeks ago after professional photographers claimed his inexperience was a 'devaluation of photography and sheer nepotism.'

Jak BetLoos posted on Twitter, saying: 'It's not what you know, but who you know and it's totally unacceptable.'

Jacqui was of the same mind and commented: 'Yep, I guess names really do sell. Sheer nepotism.'

Dani V agreed saying: 'I love the Beckhams but 16-year-old Brooklyn being the photographer for a major Burberry campaign is peak nepotism.'

Harry Harris commented sarcastically, 'Blimey, life's hard being well-connected.'

Despite the process being being streamed live on Snapchat and Instagram, the rising star appeared to be in his element and looked calm and confident. The brand first live streamed a shoot back in December when Mario Testino was behind the camera.

Brooklyn announced he was following in the legendary photographer's footsteps via Instagram earlier in the week by posting a black and white photograph of himself holding a camera.

'Excited to photograph the @Burberry campaign tomorrow,' he wrote. 'Watch it live on their Instagram & Snapchat #THISISBRIT'.

Burberry's Chief Creative and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Bailey said of the shoot: 'Brooklyn has a really great eye for image and Instagram works brilliantly for him as a platform to showcase his work.

'His style and attitude were exactly what we wanted to capture in the spirit of this new Brit fragrance campaign and I am loving the shots of Saturday's live shoot which looks incredible.'
