A lock of John Lennon's hair that was collected by a German hairdresser is set to fetch $10,000 when it is auctioned off.

The hair will go under the hammer at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on February 20 along with other rare Beatles memrobilia.

The four-inch lock was collected by a stylist who cut Lennon's 'mod style hair' before he started shooting the film 'How I Won the War' in 1966.

The dark comedy, released in 1967, follows the Second World War misadventures of British troops led by an inept commander.

In the movie, the singer played his only non-musical role, Private Gripweed.

According to the auction house website, they believe the lock on offer is the biggest piece of hair to be ever offered at auction.

They add that the haircut took place just a month after the release of the legendary Revolver album and is described as a 'rare and important' opportunity.

It is also thought that Lennon started wearing round glasses for his role in the film, and continued wearing the same style for the rest of his life.

Garry Shrum, the consignment director at Heritage Auctions told CW33: 'When you get to something, like somebody's DNA, that's the ultimate piece.

'You can get a handwritten letter, you can get a coat that somebody has worn.

'To get something this close, it's just almost impossible to get.'

Also included in the lot is a newspaper clipping and a photo showing the hairdresser's hand holding the hair.

It is captioned: 'Immediately picked up and tucked away: a clump of hair that had been John Lennon's, cut yesterday.'

The auction will be held later this month and Heritage says it will include other rare items linked to The Beatles, such as a signed photograph of all four members.

Memorabilia from other artists such as Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin also will be auctioned.
