The most famous car chase in American history took center stage in Tuesday's new episode of American Crime Story: The People V. OJ Simpson.

All the action takes place on June 17, 1994, when shortly after noon and well over an hour after he was supposed to have turned himself into police, Simpson got into his friend Al Cowlings' (played by Malcolm-Jamal Warner) white Ford Bronco (the same make and model as the one Simpson owned) and briefly went on the run.

And the first place the Bronco stops is Ascension Cemetery, where Nicole had been buried just one day before.

Having written a suicide note and threatened himself with a gun, Robert Kardashian (played by David Schwimmer) assumed Simpson had taken his own life.

He and Robert Shapiro (played by John Travolta) held a press conference a few hours after Simpson disappeared with Kardashian reading an edited version of the note.

As this is airing we see the four Kardashian children gleefully watching the TV and them chanting their last name.

He then went to see Simpson's children - Jason, Arnelle, Justin and Sydney - to tell them that their father had committed suicide.

That is when the television began to show the beginning of the low-speed Bronco chase however, with someone having tipped off police to where Simpson was after the car's description and license plate had been released by police.

Even Shapiro arrives back at his home assuming Simpson is dead, and learns from his wife Linell (played by Cheryl Ladd) that the chase is happening and on television.

Marcia Clark (Sarah Paulson) meanwhile becomes incredibly concerned thinking the Bronco is Simpson's, which they had impounded for evidence.

The action then focuses on the chase, during which time Simpson sat in the backseat of Cowlings' Bronco with a gun pointed to his head.

All major networks broke away from programming to show the chase, including NBC who still kept the Game 5 of the NBA Finals in a small box on the screen.

Police meanwhile emptied the 405 Freeway during Friday rush hour trying to apprehend Simpson and not have him kill himself.

Los Angeles was still very much in a state of unrest after multiple incidents of police brutality and the LA riots, and if Simpson shot himself many were worried about what would happen in the city.

After getting a phone call and speaking to one of the officers, Simpson finally agrees to go back to his home to see if he can speak to his mother, and then arrives at his Brentwood mansion just before 8pm, eight hours after he disappeared.

Inside the car was a mustache, money and a passport, suggesting that Simpson was planning to make a run for the Mexican border.

Simpson was emotional when he arrived back at his home, breaking down as he apologized to police and then calling his mother after instructing someone to get him some orange juice.

He arrived at Parker Center just before 10pm in police custody.
