'My head hurts': Father unwittingly listens to his daughter's death as she is hit by stray bullet while chatting to him on phone - and just after he warned her about moving to Chicago

  • Aaren O'Connor was in a car outside her Chicago apartment on Friday
  • She told her father David her head hurt, but she didn't know why
  • At that point neither of them knew she had been shot in the head
  • Mr O'Connor called her boyfriend who then contacted her roommate
  • She found her unresponsive sitting in the car a short time later
  • Her father said he wished he had told his daughter he loved her a last time

A father unwittingly listened to his 25-year-daughter die after she was hit by a stray bullet while the pair talked on the phone.

Aaren O'Connor, who worked for toy company Tomy, was sitting in her car outside her Chicago apartment on Friday night speaking to dad David when she was shot.

During the conversation she started repeatedly saying 'my head hurts' and quickly became incoherent, but neither of them knew what was wrong.

At that point she hadn't realized she had been shot in the head, and neither did her father.

He had pleaded her not to move to Chicago when she left San Diego a year earlier, fearing something might happen in the city that has seen a huge spike in gun violence.

A short time after she finished speaking to her father she was found unresponsive in her car by her roommate.

She was taken to hospital but could not be saved and passed away on Sunday.

Her death is one of at least 17 homicides in the first eight days of February in the city. It's on pace to triple the number of murders in the same month last year.

Mr O'Connor tearfully told CBS 2 Aaren had moved to the city from San Diego for a new job and her boyfriend.

He was scared of the violence and feared she was in danger.

After finding out it was the last time he would ever speak to her, he said wished he could have told his daughter he loved her one last time.

However he was filled with pride after finding out Aaren was an organ donor. Now Mr O'Connor believes 'she is still with us'.

'I didn't realize that I was having the last conversation with my daughter. Every few moments she said:"My head hurts."' he said.

'I would have loved to have told her that I loved her just one more time and was proud of her.

'She was an amazing girl.'

When she hung up the phone, a worried Mr O'Connor called Aaren's boyfriend. He then got in touch with her roommate who found her unconscious outside.

Aaren's father also had a message for the leaders and people of Chicago who he says need to address gun violence in the city, which is spiraling out of control.

Mr O'Connor said he wished he had told his daughter he loved her one last time, but admitted he was filled with pride when he found out she had signed up to be an organ donor

He told ABC7: 'Enough is enough. It's just senseless, and it's reckless. And it's really eating the soul out of the city of Chicago and the people who live here.'

Belinda Luck told NBC Chicago: 'Aaren was incredibly kind and would frequently give people 12 chances before harboring any negative feelings towards them

A GoFundMe page has been set up by her coworkers in her memory.

'Aaren was a beautiful 25 year-old woman who was intelligent, compassionate, caring, and hardworking with a deep love for her friends and family,' it reads.

'She had a great sense of humor, love for adventure and a take charge personality. By simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time the world lost an amazing person and all of her potential.

'We want to make sure that something positive can come from this senseless tragedy. While trying to solve the gun violence epidemic in Chicago seems like an impossible task, we need to start somewhere. We believe we can teach people to see the world from the perspective of others.

'We hope we can teach people that violence isn't the answer and provide them with resources to pursue a different path.

'We think we can teach people how to come together and become a stronger, more unified community.'

They announced the launch of the Aaren O'Connor Memorial Fund that would initially help her family pay for funeral expenses. Then the funds will go towards a wider cause.

'Over time, donations will fund a scholarship program in Aaren’s memory that will serve to bring hope and healing to the youth of Chicago.

'One initial idea is to fund support for at-risk Chicago youth who want to advance their education by participating in a study abroad program (Aaren loved to travel and met her boyfriend Carlos during her time abroad).

'Our long-term goal is to develop an after school program at a community center in Aaren’s name where Chicago’s youth can come together to receive the caring and resources they need to choose a non-violent path and open their hearts to others.

'Other suggestions to provide healing to our community in Aaren’s memory are welcome and encouraged. May she rest in peace.'

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said police have obtained surveillance footage in connection with the shooting and have "a very good lead from the video." No one was in custody as of Monday evening.

There have been 70 murders in the city so far this year.

By contrast, there had only been 35 murders during that same time period in 2015, meaning the number of homicides has doubled so far this year.
