Victory for Trump! The Donald wins in New Hampshire with 35 per cent of the vote - as Kasich takes a shock second and Cruz is third

Donald Trump wins the New Hampshire Republican primary with a third of the vote

Donald Trump claimed victory in the New Hampshire Republican primary elections on Tuesday night, predicting before a raucous crowd in Manchester that he'll also win the next presidential nominating contest in South Carolina. In a 15-minute speech full of greatest-hits moments that followed a much longer oration from Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders - who had just grabbed the Democratic Party's brass ring from Hillary Clinton - Trump swung in the socialist politician's direction. 'In all fairness we have to congratulate him,' Trump told a packed banquet hall three hours after polls closed and he was declared the winner. 'He wants to give away our country, folks! He wants to give it away. We're not going to let it happen!' With 89 per cent of the votes counted, Trump led the field at 35.14 per cent of the total vote in an election that poll-watchers expected would set a new record for voter participation. The margin of victory was stunning even in the face of late polls that had the billionaire real estate developer ahead by double digits. Ohio Gov. John Kasich answered the hotly contested question of who would take the silver, asserting himself as the anti-Trump to watch on 16 per cent. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz held third place with 11.56 per cent, keeping pace with his numbers in an average of the final New Hampshire polls. Cruz, whose positions lined up nicely with Iowa's heavily evangelical GOP electorate, ran up against a buzz-saw of moderate New Hampshirites out of step with his own hard-line conservatism. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was just over than a thousand votes behind Cruz at 11.1 per cent. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who stumbled in the closing days of the campaign when he repeated himself often enough to be saddled with a 'robot' nickname, sat in fifth on 10 per cent. Chris Christie was sixth on 7.5 per cent and hinted that he could drop out of the race.

Bernie declares a 'political revolution' after humiliating Hillary in New Hampshire: Clinton promises a desperate fightback as jubilant Sanders wins 60-38

Hillary Clinton bested by Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire primaries

Bernie Sanders wallowed in his victory on Tuesday night at a high school in Concord, raising his fist after humiliating Hillary Clinton. 'Because of the huge voter turnout, we won!' he said, as the crowd yelled back 'huuuuuuuge!'. With 88% of the vote counted, Sanders had 60% of the total vote and Clinton had 38.4%. Speaking in Hooksett an hour after polls closed, and Sanders' fast victory was announced, Clinton congratulated the Vermont senator on his victory. She declared: 'I still love New Hampshire, and I always will. And here's what we're gonna do. Now we take this campaign to the entire country,' she continued. 'We're gonna fight for every vote in every state.' Clearly pointing at Sanders, she said: 'People have every right to be angry. But they are also hungry. They are hungry for solutions.' The Democratic fight now moves to Nevada, which holds its caucuses a week from Saturday.
