So many of his supporters were giving that his fundraising website crashed, according to CNN.

‘Huge night! Contributions are processing, receipts are a little delayed. Keep the donations coming!!’ online Democratic fundraising company ActBlue said on its Twitter account last night.

The company said in a blog post this afternoon that it processed more than 26,000 in a single span of 15 minutes. Its busiest hour prior to that, in the history of its existence, was 13,981.

In his nationally broadcast victory speech last night Sanders asked his grassroots backers to immediately give to his campaign.

‘I'm going to hold a fundraiser right here, right now, across America,’ he said at the Concord, New Hampshire, event. ‘My request is please go to BernieSanders.com and contribute. Please help us raise the funds we need, whether it's $10 bucks, $20 bucks, or $50 bucks.’

The rising Democratic contender told them, ‘Help up us raise the money we need to take the fight to Nevada, South Carolina, and the states on Super Tuesday.’

ActBlue's site was crushed by the sprint to donate.

'Last night’s spontaneous fundraiser (the one that raised $5.2 million in less than a day) broke our external processor’s response systems,' it said. ''That’s some amazing grassroots power.'

Of the user experience problems, ActBlue said, ;It’s not ideal, and it’s not the exceptional donor experience we want to provide people with. And we were sorry for that.'

The impromptu fundraiser came after Sanders scored a massive victory over Hillary Clinton, besting her by 22 points last night in New Hampshire.

A week ago he came within one point of overtaking her in Iowa.

His odds of winning the nomination on the rise, he outraised her in January for the first time, taking in $20 million in donations to her $15 million – a scenario the Clinton campaign had been warning its own contributors about for months.

Clinton also raised $5 million for the Democratic National Committee and state parties that month, however.

Her campaign said in a statement that 95 percent of the donations it received were under $100 – a sign of Clinton’s own, growing grassroots strength.

‘We invested early in organizing and that investment has already paid off with a Hillary Clinton victory in Iowa,’ campaign manager Robby Mook said at the time.

He said the campaign would have the resources as a result of the big month to keep fighting in New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina ‘and beyond. ‘

Sanders’ average contribution in the month of January was $27, and he still outraised Clinton.

‘The numbers we’ve seen since Jan. 1 put our campaign on pace to beat Secretary Clinton’s goal of $50 million in the first quarter of 2016,’ Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver said. ‘Working Americans chipping in a few dollars each month are not only challenging but beating the greatest fundraising machine ever assembled.’
