How to dress your breakfasts
The 'dressing' is the creamy or liquid part of your breakfast. It helps bring all the elements together, though it's optional, especially if using porridge. Ordinary dairy milk doesn't really make your breakfast stand out, so I play around with lots of alternatives.
Sweet, sour and spicy Your dressings should all have a balance of sweet richness (from oil or nuts), sourness (a little lemon) and a bit of spice (try ginger, cardamom, cocoa, cinnamon, turmeric or even salt or chilli) and should meld into something not too runny.
Best dressed Natural yoghurt makes an ideal dressing. I never use flavoured yoghurt, which is often full of sugar, but I do add some flavourings myself and I've even tried to create my own alternatives to yoghurt. There are lots of dairy-free yoghurts on the market now, from soy to coconut. Non-dairy creams range from oat to almond, or you can make your own (as you'll see in some of my recipes here).
Mash it up I mostly stick to a drizzle of oil to dress my breakfast, but once in a while I go a bit more funky with unusual banana or avocado substitutes for yoghurt, like these two below...
Banana and lemon mash Mash 1 banana with the juice of ½ a lemon. Jazz it up, if you like, with 1tsp ground spice such as ginger or turmeric and you'll feel the kick. Orange or grapefruit juice can replace lemon juice, but avoid very sweet juices as banana is sweet itself. Sometimes I use almond or coconut milk instead of juice.
Avocado mash Mash together 1 ripe avocado with the juice of ½ a lemon or 2-3tbsp orange or apple juice. Jazz it up with 1tsp ground spice such as ginger, turmeric or even cocoa powder (which works well with orange juice in sweet bowls). If you want to make it sweeter add 1tbsp raw honey.
