  • Despite temperatures that were well below freezing and a snow storm the model and actress wore a crop top to the event
  • Ratajkowski started off her speech by attacking Gloira Steinem's comments that young girls supporting Sanders were just 'boy crazy'
  • 'I'm here because I support Bernie Sanders... I'm not here for the boys,' said the 24-year old
  • She also hashtagged some of her posts promoting her appearance with '#notherefortheboys'

Emily Ratajkowski hit the campaign trail in support of Bernie Sanders last night braving below-freezing temperatures and a snow storm to speak with students at the University of New Hampshire.

The model and actress also showed her support for Sanders with a custom crop-top sweater, despite the frigid weather.

And Ratajkowski proved she is much more than a pretty face as she started off her speech by laying into feminist icon Gloria Steinem, who said young females who supported Sanders were just 'boy crazy' in an interview over the weekend.

'So I am a young woman and um, well, just to make one thing clear: I'm here because I support Bernie Sanders... I'm not here for the boys, ' said Ratajkowski.

Ratajkowski, addressing the crowd on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, also declared why she supports Sanders over Clinton.

'I want a female president so that I can say to my daughter one day, you too can become president of the United States. I believe in that symbolic importance,' she said.

'But I have seen symbolism in election, symbolism that FAILS the people that so desperately need the ACTION to make change. I want my first female president to be more than a symbol, I want her to have politics that can revolutionize.'

She ended her speech by saying; 'I've been so impressed by the Sanders campaign. How he has remained dignified in this political climate. In doing so, he has reminded us that this election is not about who you'd want to hang out with.

'It's not about who can " get things done" or about who is more experienced.

'And it's certainly not about the gender of the candidate.'

Ratajkowski then continued to support Sanders on her social media accounts, where she has a combined following of roughly 10 million people, while still letting Steinem have it by hashtagging some of her posts with '#notherefortheboys.'

Steinem addressed her comments - which she made on Real Time With Bill Maher - on Facebook Monday.

'In a case of talk-show Interruptus, I misspoke on the Bill Maher show recently, and apologize for what's been misinterpreted as implying young women aren't serious in their politics,' wrote Steinem.

'What I had just said on the same show was the opposite: young women are active, mad as hell about what's happening to them, graduating in debt, but averaging a million dollars less over their lifetimes to pay it back.

'Whether they gravitate to Bernie or Hillary, young women are activist and feminist in greater numbers than ever before.'

The Sanders campaign meanwhile must be incredibly happy with their choice to have Ratajkowski introduce Sanders, as video of her speech has been viewed well over 500,000 times on her Facebook page in less than 24 hours.

The 24-year-old's mother is a professor of English and writer who met Ratajkowski's painter father while in London to teach under the Fulbright program.

Ratajkowski was raised in California and attended UCLA before dropping out after her first year to pursue modelling full time.

She shot to fame after her nude performance in Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines, and since then has balanced appearing in the pages of Vogue and in campaigns for designers such as Marc Jacobs with a film career that has seen her appear in films including Gone Girl and We Are Your Friends.

Ratajkowski also appeared in a Super Bowl commercial for Buick, and had to fly across the country for her appearance having attended the game in San Francisco on Sunday night.

EMILY RATAJKOWSKI'S INTRODUCTION REMARKS FOR BERNIE SANDERS

'Hi New Hampshire!

'It's amazing to see you all here, despite the snow storm. So many young people who are excited about Bernie Sanders. The momentum and energy behind this campaign is tangible in this room. I can't tell you how special it is to be here with you all and experience it firsthand.

'So I am a young woman and um, well, just to make one thing clear: I'm here because I support Bernie Sanders... I'm not here for the boys.

'But yeah, I want a female president so that I can say to my daughter one day, you too can become president of the United States. I believe in that symbolic importance.

'But I have seen symbolism in election, symbolism that FAILS the people that so desperately need the ACTION to make change. I want my first female president to be more than a symbol, I want her to have politics that can revolutionize.

'Bernie Sanders is offering the ACTION we desperately need. His economic solution will provide for those who suffer from the oppression of a broken system, including women.

'Bernie has the freedom from private interests and big corporations to get families the extra child care, time off for maternity leave and pay equality. Actions that effect women directly.

'He understands the importance of addressing inequality in a flawed economic system.

'We are here because we know Bernie can bring real change.

'He can create a country that does not incarcerate more than it educates. A country with a demilitarized police force---one where we do not allow young black men to be murdered without accountably.

'He gives us hope for equality.

'We have not had a candidate like Bernie Sanders in a long time, and we might not see the likes of him again. This is THE moment, our moment. 2016.

'So tomorrow show up and vote, if you're not registered you can register on site and choose to vote in the Democratic Party. Bring you family, friends, neighbors. This is how we win.

'I've been so impressed by the Sanders campaign. How he has remained dignified in this political climate. In doing so, he has reminded us that this election is not about who you'd want to hang out with. It's not about who can " get things done" or about who is more experienced.

'And it's certainly not about the gender of the candidate.

'This is about a chance for real change, one that will effect each and every American.

'This is about our future. A future to believe in.'
