Final Fantasy XV will have a ‘not very chatty’ Moogle

Twitter poll results in light Moogle inclusion.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy XV will have Moogles, director Hajime Tabata said in a series of Twitter updates.

“I will think of a fun little way to feature Moogles in Final Fantasy XV,” Tabata said. “Importantly, at this stage of development I will not be making a trade off with the other work remaining in order to fit them in. So it won’t be a very chatty Moogle, but will be done with a suitably light level of development work as a fun little.”

The official Final Fantasy XV posted a poll on Friday asking users whether or not they want to see Moogles in the game. (Our thoughts here.)

jfc are they making the game based on twitter polls?

    • KingNigma

      no

    • Budgiecat

no because they refuse to put character switching back in :3

    • Zackasaur

No. Didn’t read the article? It’s a small piece of fanservice.

      It’s also their first and only Twitter poll in a game which officially left the pre-beta phase after six months of sturdy development. You can also read about that on their Twitter. c;

Entering full beta means that the game is primarily done, content-wise. Now it’s largely polish, refinement, and implementing some extra features.

I’d use moggle designs from 12.

    • Revorse

the humanoid ones? They’re alright but I’d prefer something “cuter” like the one from Crystal Chronicles.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

If they made Moogles be serious sometimes like in the Tactics Advance and 12 games people would see them more than mere mascots. In 6 one fought, we need to do that again. Have them with wands and spears and short swords. I’m playing Tales of Jesus right now and for the first time in a long time cute is getting on my nerves.

Naw. I say Tales of Jesus because if you think of Seraphim as angels and the whole “don’t let the unwashed masses see your miracles” and the whole “people will ask you for everything, you can’t listen to everyone’s prayers, they’ll get lazy”…. It all adds up to Jesus walks, his turmoil, taking on the sins of humanity.
Fun game. Some decent characters. But not the best Tales by far.

          • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

But as for the overly cute stuff I mean Lailah and Edna mostly. Half the time I like them, half the time I hate them.

            • Unretributed

              Whaaaaat??

Edna>>>>>>> the whole cast. When was she ever trying to be cute!? She’s the opposite, she’s pretty much the anime version of April from Parks and Recreation.

              • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Yeah. But her clothes. The sticking her tongue out after getting outted for mocking people. I dont like liars and manipulators unless they do it to bad people. Like it’d be fine if she tricked villains.

                • Unretributed

….I don’t even know what to say to this.

                  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

It’s fine. She doesn’t make or break the game. I’m disappointed a bit in Rose too but none of the characters are pure hated. But i do wish Dezel and Mokleo were the leads and voice of the game. Regardless. I really want to get back to an all human or physical cast with a bigger world and ships and boats you controlled.

  • ayb_91

Great. No more nuisance in the name of cuteness!

  • Wolf Star

    That’s good. I couldn’t take 13-2 seriously. Lol

  • PuppetMaster

Prepare for hours of one liner, kupo 😮

  • Serph

    Eh, I liked Mog.

  • ZayZay_11 (The_Anomaly_Crab)

I’m sorry but this game is gonna be s***. That fact that they didn’t have moogles and airships from the start of the game alone tells me they’re probably missing other stuff as well. This is no longer Nomura’s vision, it is now Tabata.

    • Thomas Kolev

We don’t even know what Nomuras vision really was. Maybe Versus XIII didn’t have moogles and airships either.

      • ZayZay_11 (The_Anomaly_Crab)
        • Mustardrice

That never said Airships were pilotable, that was mistranslated, all Nomura said was that Airships were in the game and they had them flying over a map, not that the player could control or pilot an airship.

And guess what? Airships are in the game and they do in fact fly over the map, even in the XV demo Niflheim Airships are constantly flying over the map.

And XV already had a Moogle in it as a toy in Cidney’s truck, and they were toys/cameo the same they were toys/cameo in FF7, FF8 and FF10, not to mention the Moogle toy in Cidney’s truck matches Nomura’s description of what he said Moogles would look like for the game being similar to Type-0 Moogles.

        • Thomas Kolev

Well, it’s almost like games change over the course of development and shouldn’t be announced too early because of that.

      • XiaomuArisu

Well back when it was Versus it had the Mafia with Romeo&Juliet influences

        • Thomas Kolev

Hamlet rather, and that seems to still be there.

    • Mustardrice

XV already had Moogles as toys and cameos just like FF7, FF8 and FF10 did, and Airships was always low priority, they never said they weren’t going to do an Airship, and Nomura never once said there would be pilotable airships either.

      >This is no longer Nomura’s vision
How? It’s still pretty much the same story, all the characters are the same characters they’ve always been except for Stella Nox Fleuret being changed into Luna Nox Fleuret, mind you that change happened when Nomura was still director but wasn’t made public until after he moved off, same as Regis’s new face and hair, that was all that changed on Regis.

The story is still about Niflheim invading Lucis and stealing the crystal, forcing Noctis into exile and him to go on a road trip with Gladio, Ignis and Prompto around the world to get the power so that he can reclaim his kingdom, his crystal and take down Niflheim, all while the nights get longer because of the plague and all while Noctis interacts with a blonde Nox Fleuret woman from Tenebrae.

    • oldgameswerebetter

for me as “final fantasy” this had already failed when they said you can control only 1 character.
i’m not saying it will be a bad game, maibe it will be a gem, but i have not much interest in it now

    • BlahBlahBlee

I think everyone needs to calm down and give others the right to be disappointed by what turns this game has made. Mustardrice and others can say that this is Nomura’s vision, but what is their proof? Considering the amount of drastic (yes, they are not subtle) changes being made and Nomura’s own words (http://gematsu.com/2014/10/tetsuya-nomura-kingdom-hearts-iii-message-kingdom-hearts-memorial-ultimania), I don’t see how anyone can assume that this project now operates somehow under Nomura’s blessing.

Which, if that’s not important to someone, that’s fine, but if you respect creative vision and the integrity necessary to not trample or ‘reimagine’ someone’s work, then you should have a big problem with FF XV. I had been an avid supporter of Versus since its unveiling, so getting “pretty much” the original game is not really cutting it for me and many others.

  • Rodrigo Oliveira

    “Not very chatty Moogle”
Even the Moogle is emo in this one

    • Preston Ray

      No one is emo

  • Rodrigo Oliveira

Next step: Moogles are now black

  • PhoenixAutomatic

    Still it’s a great addition. :)

  • Animal Gray

As much as I love Moogles, I wouldn’t have said “This isn’t Final Fantasy.” if they weren’t included…some of y’all are trippin.

    • Zackasaur

It wouldn’t even be this first amazing FF entry to not feature a real Moogle. FFX only had a toy one, for example.

You could already find a little Moogle decoration inside the truck in Episode Duscae.

But it sounds like they’re going to incorporate it in a minimalist way, which might actually be really cool. I’m certainly down with this. c:

      • Rain

Lulu’s weapon was a moogle <3 that was absolutely cute and the best use of Moogles throughout the whole series.

        • Zackasaur

Did you know that they actually sell a replica of Lulu’s plushie? :3

That’s cool! It’s a perfect way to have some Moogles fanservice without interrupting the game’s strong development and altering any of the vision.

I’m prepared for an utterly amazing game. All signs point to what may even be my favourite FF of all time, but Final judgement will come after finishing it. I’m certain to love it, though. c:

    • MisterS

      game of all time.

      • TheMechaEngineer

Can you send me the copy you played?

        • Zackasaur

Well, reading in context instead of being snarky about it, it seems obvious to me that he’s posting his own expectation and is not actually a time traveler.

And there really isn’t anything wrong with that. It’s his personal outlook and not really an offense to anybody else. And if he concludes the same thing after having played it, my previous sentence will still apply just as strongly.

          • TheMechaEngineer

No ones opinion about this game is valid till, they play and beat the game. If you think I am being snarky that is your perception. Now claiming a game is the best is without playing it is just ridiculous, sure you can have high hopes, but those who have valid reasons to be skeptical are just as valid . I’m sure S/He was just playing around so calm down and stop jumping to conclusions.

            • Zackasaur

Did MisterS ever target your “skepticism,” here? I see no reason for you to defend your own view as “valid” when no one said otherwise. You did, however, target his as invalid (twice, now). I don’t think you can justify trying to turn the tables. I’m just saying that his own anticipation deserves more respect than that. It’s perfectly harmless and completely personal, after all.

And I actually know MisterS personally. We’re good friends. I know exactly what he meant by his comment. He is very excited! c:

              • TheMechaEngineer

I’m glad YOU knew what he mean’t, but the rest of us on the thread aren’t as insightful, due to not personally knowing him. I don’t need to justify myself when I say “Saying a game is the greatest of all time without beating it is ridiculous”. Anyone who says a game is the greatest of all time and means it does deserve respect as a person, but his opinions are fair game when its something that illogical. Also I am skeptical (what of it?)and it had nothing to do with him but with your comment. I was addressing you in that. Again I’m sure he wasn’t serious(I hope he wasn’t), so calm down and don’t take it so personal.

                • Zackasaur

I’m actually the calm one, here. And I didn’t take it personally. c:

I just get tired of seeing people put down for totally harmless opinions and for getting excited about their games. Anyway, I suppose we’re done.

                  • TheMechaEngineer

I guess we are, and please don’t vilify me for challenging other people’s opinions. I didn’t insult him in anyway expect challenge his opinion, and if that does bother you then work that out.

                    • Zackasaur

I spoke a little too soon on being done (if you don’t mind), because I actually like/respect the tone of your reply and think we could end on a better foot.

I just think that the presentation/tone of your disagreement with his level of anticipation is what made it look mean-spirited. I don’t actually have any issue with the perspective you provide (it’s totally valid and fine). It just felt like it was putting down how MisterS felt. My apologies if I came across too harshly.

And I frequently like many of your Gematsu comments, too, even if we don’t always agree on everything.

                    • TheMechaEngineer

I never mind a good conversation, (So of course I don’t mind).I appreciate that. I’m usually the lurker type but comment here and there. I agree with you on that me and you don’t always agree on everything, and that’s okay. I like that. I don’t want to surround myself with people who always agree with me on the major issues, you in a way challenge me look at what I believe in, in a new perspective.

I try and treat everyone on the internet as if i was talking to them face to face, and with respect of course. I never mean’t it in a mean way, but I should have taken into account that it could be read the wrong way so for that I am wrong and do apologize. I guess there is always a more coherent way to gets one point across.

Also never think I dislike you or hate you because I disagree with or challenge your opinions. Every challenge when done respectfully presents the opportunity for those involved to learn something about the opposition and them self. Thanks for coming back and I look for to have more conversations (whether we agree or not) in the coming threads.

thats not really personal; by that logic we all know each other personally here :p

                    • Zackasaur

Not in the slightest. We talk as intimately as I do with anyone else in my local area outside of my girlfriend. Family issues, girls, personal hardships, video games, politics, advice, etc.

I’ve never believed distance is a real barrier to a good friendship. That becomes more commonly recognised every day, and the internet has really been a revolution in many ways.

You might disagree, but I draw a hard line on the subject. It’s something I acknowledge very personally. Spending a big part of my childhood in a very hateful, sexist, racist, pseudo-fascist, and ultra religious community because of where my father moved us for his job taught me a valuable lesson in the meaning of global friendships. I’d have otherwise been very alone for many years.

Now, I don’t want to go too far off-topic with this tangent. :P

… somehow I’m starting to doubt that this will be released in 2017.

Are they really on stage where they decide whether to include moogle… or gathering materials for rocks?

    https://twitter.com/ffxven/status/655096152954572803

Let’s just hope that this was all silly form of PR and that they already had things like that already in plans.

    • Preston Ray

Tabata confirmed twice that it would be released in 2016

      • Phelan

        yeah… and I twice didn’t believe him.

Future will show. If it will be released in 2016… good … if not… well also good.

        • Noctis Pendragon

Hashimoto confirmed 2016 too (on stage ) , don’t you believe him too ?

          • Phelan

            Trust me.

I don’t believe anyone when it comes to release dates. It’s easier that way…. to not expect that things will be just like X or Y said.

            • Unknowingreaper

Agree Ill believe it when this games on shelves. Anything can happen as we well know seeing as this game took tens to make.

          • Heropon

People still belive Hashimoto after all of his troll ?

            • Noctis Pendragon

Well it is someone who kept FF VII:R secret safe while trolling , he deserves some faith .

            • Mustardrice

              He’s done nothing untrustworthy though

In 2013 in February PS4 announcement he came on stage and just said “please be excited for E3”, then at E3 a few months later FFXV and KH3 were revealed.

Hashimoto was also the person who got the FF7 remake started, it was also already in development in 2014 when he announced the FF7 port at PSX last year.

      • ayanami-chan

        I… don’t believe him

The rock tweet was meant to show the game using photogrametry ( the fastest way to make realistic assests ) .

Btw the game is in Beta stage : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=184795634&postcount=77 .

    • Zackasaur

No offense, but your post only tells us that you don’t know much about how modern AAA development differs from past game development. It’s a lot less linear a process, now!

That’s okay, though! I never blame people for not knowing things, but only if they’re unwilling to learn afterwards. c: Their are tonnes of things unknown to everyone.

A chief innovation to create worlds of such detail and gameplay interactions of such complexity is having a massive network of sub-teams. These games are not made in a linear fashion. So, you will have the rock sub-team from the environment design team still looking for real-world models while some gameplay teams are in fact finishing their work.

If you recall a previous Active Time Report, Tabata demonstrated this a bit by showing different enemy desIgns, combat moves, ladder climbing, etc. Each minutia had its own team, so completion ranged from something like 10% to 90%.

A lot of the modern sub-team planning will even involve international development, collaborations like Avalanche Studios tech, and outsourcing to specialist studios, such as FFXV demonstrated with early work on the train station modeling.

      Does that clear up everything?

Also: FFXV is already in the full beta stage of development. That’s a huge update that gives you a more meaningful picture of where they are in development.

      • Unknowingreaper

in case you haven’t noticed this games doesn’t have the best track record. So I don’t blame him for making that statement. At this point I’ll believe it’ll be out by 2016 when I have a copy in my hands and not a second sooner.

        • MetalRizeAwesomeOnmipenismon

          As Versus XIII

          Sure

          As FFXV

          Meh to not really

        • Zackasaur

FFXV has a fantastic track record. It’s been airtight for years.

If you’re thinking of Versus XIII, don’t blame great devs for having their work soiled by bad executives and unfinished tech. Those guys had to help save FFXIII, help save FFXIV, reboot engines, etc. What a mess!

          • Unknowingreaper

I blaming the whole company. And vs 13 is FF 15 but they messed it up so royally they had to make it a number ff to keep from lossing assets. And if the track record is so great why does this gameplay look completely different from it being shown at E3? I mean you play as one character for Christ sake.

            • Noctis Pendragon

I don’t think FF XV has any real assests from FF Versus XIII .

All CGIs were surly remade and FF XV is a fully next-gen game so they surly had to remake the assests ( PBR , new scale of destructibility etc .. ) .

The only thing they could keep are the concept and the animations (only the bones ) .

              • Unknowingreaper

They why not shit can it and make a new ff 15? They apperantly had something to lose

                • Zackasaur

They had a generation of incredible ideas, fan loyalty, devs’ hard work, good will, and more to lose.

Of course they did what they did. I would have been utterly appalled if they hadn’t.

                • Noctis Pendragon

Maybe they wanted it to be FF XV ?
Or maybe FF XVI needed more time ?

They said they wanted to turn FF Versus XIII into FF XV since 2008 so i think the liked those concepts quite a bit .

              • Mustardrice

Animation data for combat actions and battle speed for Noctis and the others from 2011 are still used in XV demo, the models were made new for XV though at 100k polygons each character as opposed to the 20k each character the PS3 version had.

                https://youtu.be/YrupmBO8lJU

The CGI of Regis vs Idola would still be in they’d just change Regis’s face in that, plus the CGI of the shots of Insomnia and Accordo would still be in.

Any Versus CGI from before 2010 wasn’t even going to be in Versus anyway so none of that even counted anymore anyway even for Versus.

                • Noctis Pendragon

While you are rigth you are forgetting the CGI’s graphics do also need to improved but they surly also changed the scenes a lot more than just changing the character models .

I don’t think Visual Workd will use thier CGI tech from pre 2012 , they surly improved it ( just look at the FF Type-Next CGI teaser which was made just for fun ) .

There is no way FF XV’s CGIs are at the same tech lvl than FF XIII/vsXIII CGIs , they can keep the assests but still need to change a lot of things (the phyics simulations , the fire , the destruction etc ) .

                  • Mustardrice

Yes but even the CGI from the 2011 Versus trailer had some minor touch ups in the 2013 XV trailer, most notably the Regis vs Idola scene changed the color filter, added new characters into the scene, changed some effects, and even the Noctis scene of him in the car they changed the bokeh effect and the light in the background while it was also darkened.

I think from the 2013 version all they would need to do is just change Regis’s face and hair to his current face and hair since that’s all they really changed on him, he’s still in that same suit so that’s all they’d need to change anyway.

                    • Noctis Pendragon

They changed that scene once again at Jump Festa i believe ( the lighting for instance and the speculars ) .

Anyway my point is they didn’t keep FF Versus XIII for its physical assets but more for the ideas and concepts .

SE canceled games which also were in a 20% state or even more ( e.g : the last Legacy of Kain had a working Alpha with tons of gameplay mechanics and assets but they still canceled it ) .

                • MetalRizeAwesomeOnmipenismon

                  Thanks for this video
I love the side by side

          • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

            …Screw Wada,,,

            I want my Versus back:(

        • BestGrill

Ignore Zack. He always has a dumb excuse for Square Enix and Sony.

          • Zackasaur

            You’re not very intelligent, huh?

            • Unknowingreaper

come on now your defending something that’s ten years in the making and act like everything went accordingly. Square and final Fantasy isn’t fail proof and for their sake I hope this game is good.

              • Zackasaur

It’s like you’re not even reading. I just condemned an entire generation’s worth of SE failings.

That’s what makes this turnaround so remarkable. They were a MESS last gen and had to do engine overhauls, modernisation, an executive swap, and more to turn it around.

It would be delusional to not observe that change, you know?

                • SirRichard

I would hesitate to call this a remarkable turnaround just yet. FFXIV becoming ARR was truly remarkable, but on the whole they’re not exactly above their bad habits of last gen just yet. For one, they’re already seemingly abandoning Luminous Engine (dropped in favour of UE4 for KHIII, in use solely for FFXV so far).

And after talking a big game about its predecessor’s sales being eye-opening, Square Enix aren’t localising Bravely Second themselves (Nintendo catching the ball again), and then there’s their newer sins like that Augment Your Preorder lunacy.

And, well, FFXV isn’t even out the door yet. Don’t be patting their back just yet, you know?

                  • Zackasaur

Your comment is an interesting one with some thought behind it, but I also think that you’re missing some important points and that some of this is misinterpreted/misunderstood. I would like to respond to this with some bullets. c:

-FFXIV ARR was indeed remarkable, and it was one of the first indications of the radical changes happening inside of SE. You’ll notice that FFXV mirrors that process intensely.

-Having other projects move off Luminous certainly shows that they still have engine issues, sure. But I’d actually say that this entire move just shows how fantastically SE have changed. Last gen, they had virtually unusable engine tech… And they absolutely MANDATED that all of their big projects had to use it. This hampered development for all of the major Final Fantasies, causing dev hell everywhere. FF Versus XIII had too much progress to just be moved off, but they transferred it to the newest iteration of their engine work (Luminous) and totally merged the Luminous team into the FFXV team for maximum synergy and a process of real dev feedback on the engine. Meanwhile, instead of choking projects like KHIII and DQXI by forcing them to be developed on unfinished tech, they made the much smarter move to actually get those games done with an unprecedentd level of cooperation between Epic. So far, the results are beautiful… And we’re actually getting games from SE, instead of the years of dev hell we got last gen. Of all things, this engine maneuverability might actually demonstrate a “changed SE” more than anything else does! This is the exact opposite of the mistakes of the old SE.

-I share some frustration with Nintendo’s slow localisations of the Bravely games, but I suspect that SE made a contract with Nintendo that extended to Second. It’s an old mistake that can’t just be erased. That said, at least we’re getting them at all. SE still aren’t perfect on localisation–just look at Dragon Quest games on 3DS. DQ Heroes, though, indicates yet another fantastic policy reversal from SE. Hopefully the DQ series’ move onto PS platforms is in part to achieve bigger success in the west.

-Not only are SE’s western and Japanese marketing departments totally separated, but those marketing departments are a pretty different discussion than talking about the actual devs, executive management, engines, etc. It’s more of a side-tangent to talk about marketing, especially from the Eidos side. That said, they did reverse that policy after bad feedback, so at least they’re more responsive than they would have been in the past.

-It’s perfectly reasonable to see the huge changes in SE and want to encourage that direction. When you see a company doing bad things, you respond with negativity, right? You do that to get the response you desire. When you see a company doing the RIGHT things, responding with positive reinforcement is the best way to encourage more of the same.

-You neglected some important information. Aside from the FFXIV and FFXV turnarounds and smart engine decisions, SE underwent a full executive restructure. One of the benefits of that transition that is both praiseworthy and immediately noticeable is the actual games they are developing! Yes, we have fantastic progress on FFXV and KHIII, alongside great maintenance on FFXIV. We also have a fantastic DQ revival happening. But then, look even deeper:

-Nier is actually getting a second game, and they’re doubling down in confidence by bringing in Yoshida’s art and Platinum’s combat expertise. This is the kind of decision the old SE would not have made, having decided that Nier wasn’t a mega blockbuster. SE’s new CEO has stated that he believes it takes three entries in an IP to truly decide on that IP’s fate. One isn’t enough. That’s a great thing to hear!

-Star Ocean V is happening, with an appropriate Tri-Ace collaboration and a great producer who really “gets” what makes the old games good.

-I mentioned the huge Dragon Quest revival already, but it really deserves attention. They’re trying to revive it in the west after failing it in the past, we’re seeing it move back into bigger-budget territory on PS4, and they’re being more experimental with the IP.

-They actually pulled together the will and resources for a full FFVII PS4 remake after so many years of teasing and fan begging. They’ve even gotten the perfect team of leadership to get it done right.

-They’ve signaled not only more interest in bringing back older IPs, but in working on new IPs again. Project Setsuna is not only an acknowledgement of the love for fans of older games like Chrono Trigger and an attempt at building a new IP, but also a decision which shows that they understand not every game needs a KHIII/FFXV budget to be worth their time.

                    -SaGa is back.

-They’re actually supporting their fans on Vita well, which is another acknowledgement that not everything needs to be on the scale of KHIII/FFXV in sales/budget to be worth doing.

-They’re not forcing all of their new projects to be multiplatform when sales/demographics don’t really indicate that that’s necessarily the best move for the project. Hello, The Last Remnant…

I could go on with more, but this has surely become a bit of a long post. So I’ll have mercy! xD

                    • SirRichard

Sorry, mate, but that all smacks of being far, far too easily pleased with things. I doubt there was any contract with Nintendo, coupled with their treatment of DQ it’s much simpler to see as plain lack of faith on Square Enix’s part (the same lack of faith that will see us denied SaGa, I’m currently betting).

A Warriors game is not the herald of a large-scale revival nor is it particularly bigger-budget or experimental, either. I like these games, I really like them, but they are the bog-standard spinoff template for franchises these days. Being crowd-pleasers and generally financially successful, it’d frankly be sillier of Square Enix to leave it untouched, and if they didn’t do it Koei-Tecmo certainly would’ve. Where we are right now, I’m afraid you’re looking far too deeply into this. DQXI on PS4 can be seen more as an attempt to boot some life into the system in Japan — after all, they will need a substantial audience for their other works there.

On that note, FFVII remake – let’s not joke, they’ve always had the time and resources for this. This has always been the panic button, this has always been the thing to spring for when times aren’t good. If they needed to, they would drop everything and boot this out the door to make money. You ask me, the FFVII announcement was something to bolster their reputation, which has taken a deserved beating in recent years, especially since it’s so far out that all we have is a CG trailer. We don’t have any real idea of how it’ll actually play, mind you,

I would note that we don’t actually have any of these games yet, and to my knowledge, beyond Star Ocean V we don’t have any idea of release windows or anything of the sort, so I wouldn’t yet claim we’re out of the woods yet on development hell situations with these lads. I wouldn’t put much stake in the words of the new executives, either -after all, it was the new president who claimed Bravely Default was an eye opener, and yet they’re not doing Second.

And finally, no, Eidos are not a separate entity, because Eidos no longer exist. They’re Square Enix Europe, and Square Enix USA now, and when they share the name they share the shame. Even if the galling preorder shenanigans, microtransactions in full-priced games, reports and rumours of poorly managed development in their Montréal development studio and so on aren’t because of the direct orders of the home office, it still falls on the Japanese side for not holding the reins more tightly.

Mind you, they have made good moves. SOV, Nier Automata, Setsuna, localising FF Explorers and World of FF, making concerted efforts to rein in the insanity of Kingdom Hearts (and taking a much fairer, superior approach to remastering old games, on that subject) are all welcome moves, and there is evidently growing confidence in their Japanese work that just mysteriously vanished over night last gen. But their mistakes are too grand to simply sweep under the rug with a bunch of announcements, mistakes that will need years of work and evidence to demonstrate they’ve learned anything. Square Enix are overly fond of announcements, but all the actual actions are still a long time away.

Congratulate them when they’ve actually done something, is all, not just when they’ve talked about it. It isn’t done until it’s in our hands, and only when we see their behaviour after they’ve taken these actions can we really start to judge if any sort of reformation has really occurred. The signs are promising, but a lot of problems still remain, and I’m not convinced they’re clear of their most egregious just yet.

                  • TheMechaEngineer

My thoughts exactly! I feel this is a more realistic view on Square. The good with the bad, but still stating the bad, as some on this site brush away a little to easily.

          • ayanami-chan

            bruh

        • Noctis Pendragon

If the oldest assets from FFXV is really from 2012 , a 2016 release that would be an amazing feat for a game of this scope .

      • ayanami-chan

I agree but I too doubt it will reach it’s 2016 release

        • Zackasaur

Oh, nothing I said touches in any way on the 2016 target! If they don’t hit it, I’ll just be glad they’re not releasing an unfinished/unpolished game.

I stopped release date speculation ages ago. I think it’s just an unhealthy practice.

    • Mustardrice

That Photogrammetry image is more than a year old, just because they uploaded it recently doesn’t mean it’s something they did recently, it was from their hiking and mountain climbing trip that they took in 2013/early 2014, ages ago.

      • Noctis Pendragon

I noticed some assests in the demo which could only have been done with the help of photogrammetry (or a lot of time and talent ) .

  • Preston Ray

    This looks pretty cool

  • Unknowingreaper

Cool see you dec 31 2016 ffxv. Really a poll to add moogles? Just make the f@cking game already. That’s time and money that could be used to polish the game and at this point it seems like every second counts

  • MisterS

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES, Kupo!
I am against compromises, i want my full moogle experience!
Well, it shouldnt interrupt the game developement tho.

  • BestGrill

Probably will be hidden within 50 layers of the second last dungeon in the upper right corner of a room just so the dudebros don’t get scared away from the game.

    • ayanami-chan

      lolwut

    • ScorchedBacon

I think the main characters already did. But, eh. Fuck’em.

  • vertical09

Cool. Maybe make some sidequest involve moogles.

    fun little what tabata!!!?

    • dzeidzei

Fun little extra :) The message was just cut off.

“it won’t be a very chatty Moogle”

    THANK CHRIST

  • ayanami-chan

    Not too bad I say

  • TheMechaEngineer

Here is my problem with them putting this polls on twitter (This late in development). I feel like they give off the impression that they don’t completely have this game figured out, as well as they should. I can’t believe I’m saying this but the next time i want to hear about this game is when they are ready to announce the release date.

    • BestGrill

They’ll announce the exact release date and then delay it another year :P

      • TheMechaEngineer

I would just lose my shit if that happened. For some strange reason i do believe the game will be out in late 2016 but I don’t know how coherent the story will be.

        • Noctis Pendragon

The game just went in Beta stage , 2016 seems really possible .

          • TheMechaEngineer

It does, I’m not doubting that. Although i’ll believe the release date when the game is in my hands.

  • RAGDEVIII

    Moogle with tuxedos..calling it now.

  • Daniel Bui

I notice a very stark difference between the reactions here and the reactions on Siliconera. More people are accepting on Gematsu, but everyone on Siliconera are treating this like cancer and saying that its gonna delay the game or that the game isn’t gonna be any good. Its just pathetic…..

    • ScorchedBacon

You should see how bad it was over on NeoGaf. If I ever have to hear “lack of vision” again, it’ll be too soon.

      • Zackasaur

If you’ve ever had any desire to see REAL lack of vision, go read some dumb NeoGaf threads.

        You you want a strong sense of vision, get ready to play FFXV. c;

        • ScorchedBacon

It was just… Constant snobbish elitism… Entire pages of it,man!

          • Zackasaur

Well, you can’t spell “ignorant” without “ign.”

            • MisterS

there are some decent users tho, but way too many trolls and haters..

      • MisterS

        ign is even worse XD

        • ScorchedBacon

I dunno… One is a bunch of idiots and trolls, while the other is filled with stuck up snobs.

    • Zackasaur

Those commenters are the real cancer.

      • MisterS

problem is we are a rather small community and with a big one, there wont be someone answering to every post to tell them whats wrong.

        • Zackasaur

Yeah, any hope for real discussion there gets drowned out by the hysteria.

  • pekot

    The quite the better .

  • http://twitter.com/M_Demolish Demolish

    How about Moogle Story DLC?

    • ayb_91

Wth? Who would even ask for that!?

      • Zackasaur

I think Demolish just did. :P

        • ayb_91

Lol. Thanks for reminding me. XD

    • ayanami-chan

How about in the actual fucking game?

      • MetalRizeAwesomeOnmipenismon

        LMAOOOOOOOO

  • GaruObelisk

Hopefully they do something new with the Moggle creatures. Find them really stupid personally.

    • Zackasaur

I think it would be cool if they’re seen as something really odd, like legendary faeries that no one ever actually sees… Except maybe that one crazy Big Foot Squatcher.

Mind, I have confidence that they’ll do it really well, one way or another.

    • nekolife

I didn’t mind moogles in FF6 but ever seen they had to draw them big enough to actually see I find them really stupid looking too…

  • comfortablecoffin

    now just give me Tonberries

  • Infinity

Why not just replace Moogle with a different new creature? Didn’t care that much for Moogle as a character in the series.

    • Zackasaur

I think the entire point is that the Moogle isn’t really essential to the game, here. But it’s a cute bit of fanservice that means a lot to many old FF fans. The poll was pretty decisive and had surprisingly wide participation.

  • Saddio

I like Moogles. They could use a slight redesign though. Make the head smaller, give them a bigger tummy or something.

  • Zackasaur

Hey, here is something interesting that I noticed! The English and Japanese polls for Moogles were separate, which means we can compare the results.

    English:

    https://twitter.com/FFXVEN/status/662253174191992832

    Japanese:

    https://twitter.com/FFXVJP/status/662216605867245569

Both were “yes” by a landslide, but the Japanese one was notably even more so. They clearly adore their Moogles!

    • Noctis Pendragon

Not really reliable since the Japanese poll isn’t region locked , somone could vote in both polls (likely the people who really care about the Moogles being in or not ) or a Westener could just vote in the Japanes poll .

But it would be cool to know how much the east fanbase is different from the west one , i don’t even think SE has the answer .

      • Zackasaur

While that’s true, you necessarily have to be talking about an extreme minority who would do that. Most super-fans didn’t even notice both, let alone the less hyperactive fans.

We could also point out that the polls are self-selected or that you could go make multiple Twitter accounts, but those complaints would also be far too fringe to rule out the extremity of the results.

      • MisterS

you shouldnt forget that every human being with a heart loves moogles and would vote for it. I dont think there is need for multiple acc and for the rest.. damn HEARTLESS!!! (get it?)

  • https://twitter.com/Kaisenex Kaisen

Sigh…it’s just a waste of time adding them in at this point

    • Zackasaur

      1. Fan response indicates otherwise.

      2. Tabata has indicated just how incredibly little this affects their resources and time. In statistics, that kind of resource would be deemed negligible.

      • Pekola

        Zack, please hear me out.

Is it really necessary to respond to every post and every comment? I mean really, I get you’re excited but…yeah.

I never thought I’d say this considering Gematsu thrives on comments, but perhaps you need to comment a bit less? I think most people get the gist of what you meant by the first few comments.

        • Zackasaur

I value having more personal conversations with individual commenters. You can’t really get a wealth of ~discussions~ without responses. You just get scattered comments floating around, rather meaninglessly. I welcome anyone who wants to be a frequent participant and broaden the scope of the discussion.

Plus, I’ve responded to far less than half of the people here. I only responded when there was something important to add. The question is hyperbolic.

But, to answer it… It does feel necessary, yes. At least as necessary as having a comments section in the first place. If we’re not looking to get discussions, just disable the reply button (well, you probably can’t do that in Disqus) or the comments altogether. Certainly, no one gets hurt by having actual discussion and new information injected. The more people like that, the better. And as every post was an on-topic reply adding a new dimension, it’s the absolute opposite of one of the two necessary qualities of spam (frequency, and repetition).

          • Pekola

I’m gonna assume no one has a problem with it then other than troublemakers.

            I don’t really mind.

            • Zackasaur

Okay, cool! I’m glad to hear it. And I’ve worked on improving how I interact with troublemakers, too.

My advice would be linking to other comments you made in here as well. Most people will fail to read past comments, then bring up something that is already being discussed in here below.

I think it would be best in that case, if you want to reply, to link them to the current discussion.

That helps to cut down on repeats, which some could consider spam. Just like old school forums where you have multiple threads about the same topic, then a Mod comes along to merge them all to clean it up.

Same principle, but we have to work with a flawed Disqus system.

                Thanks for understanding.

                • Zackasaur

That would have helped in the Sakaguchi case, but I can’t think of any place in this article where that would be useful/relevant.

I will keep that thought handy in the future, though. c:

        • Rory Harvey

I don’t see the problem. It’s not like Zack is being abusive or anything. In fact he’s been very friendly in the posts that I have seen and is at least getting involved in a conversation.

        • https://twitter.com/Kaisenex Kaisen

          I think it’s fine *shrugs*

        • MisterS

i was even worse than him in one uncharted 4 news, so i think its totally fine XD
i mean he tries to help people with enlighten him mostly and some people didnt get everything with the article as it appears!
we should celeberate Zack for helping them out! XD
but seriously, he does explain things good.

  • Unknowingreaper

    I hate moogles

  • ayanami-chan

I’d like to be able to summon like a tidal wave of them and just smash the enemy.

    • Joe murphy

      Not a good idea.

Televisions would explode from over cute-ness.

  • Rain

Moogles have never been chatty anyway..all they do is mostly sell you stuff or be used for saving the data.

    • Zackasaur

That depends on the game. That’s definitely true in a lot of them, though, yeah. But we’ve had Moogles as actively engaged societies, as party members, etc. before, too.

We know that the Moogle appearance will be quiet and relatively minor, here… So now you’ve got me wondering more about the level of interaction. Will they sell something? Will we rescue them? Will the objective just be to spot an elusive one?

      • MisterS

when do you have to fight a moogle???
how can someone be so cruel..
        this world depress me -.-

        • Zackasaur
          • MisterS

based on what i know about ff and my bias towards moogles, i will say this is the worst FF ever!

            • Ferrick

so just because we thwarted a gigantic ass moogle whose aim is to consume all aether (basically the lifeline of the world) it’s automatically the worst FF ever?

              • MisterS

                its about attacking moogles..

                btw its a joke.

                • Ferrick

                  Fuck moogles.

            • Luna Kazemaru

Ahahaahha you would not be saying that if you did those moogle quest in FF14

              • MisterS

                why?

    • Jay

That’s the kind of moogle I like.

  • 36Chambers

I know this statement is played out but I just want to play this damn game lol. Tabata is always talking about how they want to implement more stuff but he’s unsure because of “the stage of development” they’re in. I wish they’d stop being so unsure of themselves and stop trying to shoehorn things in. I sincerely hope for a late 2016 release.

    • Joe murphy

      Just have Patience.
      Ever hear that? Haha
We should finally get a firm release date in March, just can’t remember what day in March.

      • 36Chambers

I haven’t forgotten about the March release date for the release date my friend. My patience isn’t wavering because shit, we’ve been waiting for this game for damn near 10 years so what’s another year or two? But i’d be lying if I said they weren’t testing my patience with some of these statements haha .

        • Joe murphy

Oh I hear ya, I’d rather them come out with a firm release date than anything, my only gripe with Sqaure is horrible non existence of release dates. Heck I wouldn’t care if they just said April 26 of 2017. Would be better than nothing.

          • Zackasaur

Yeah, I know what both of you guys mean!

I think I’d rather they sit on the release date until they’re totally sure than make an announcement and then have to delay it, though.

            • Joe murphy

I’m a person that delays don’t bother me, I usually see the good in them and not the bad. Just more time to finish other games.

Edit: Because lets face it once this game comes out…. I may develop butt sores.

              • Zackasaur

I completely agree with you there. I think that complaining about delays is part of what encourages publishers to put out unfinished/broken games and to cut too much content. I think openness to delays is a very pro-developer mentality.

That said, given the history and just how ravenous the fanbase is, I think announcing a date and then delaying would be a PR nightmare. So, at least in this case, I’d personally be happy to see them be really careful about it.

                • Joe murphy

Want to hear a real nightmare? Was just thinking this that made me laugh. In March at their press conference they come out with: “We have decided to harness the power of the Un-released PS5 and Xbox 2 and delay XV further.” Now that would not be good.
Just a quick short creepypasta :P

                  • Zackasaur

                    >:c

                    • Syn

                      lmao…..I think I would die inside…………..

  • Luna Kazemaru

LOL can we burn it on a stake? After XIV i hate moogles

    • Ferrick

      burn moogles to the ground!

    • Unknowingreaper

Lets skin em and wear em like lighting did

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Just one more quest, Kupo! Wait, this one is quest that never ends! Teehee! >___________________>

      • MadokaXHomura

        Yeah that was annoying.

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Haha, yeah. Even Yoshi P admitted in an interview somewhere that they went a bit overboard with the moogle quests.

          • Ferrick

with 3.1, they added the moogle house… I fear that they may give us some quest to find some stone far away from it

            • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I hope not, that would be so evil, lol.

              • Ferrick

we have to burn it down first before it gets the chance!

  • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

If it looks goofy like the recent trash ones then Tabata can go screw himself.

  • fallen

“I will think of a fun little way to feature Moogles in Final Fantasy XV,” Tabata said.

Announcing intent to think of an element of the game… come onnnn.

    • B Man

….which will be revealed in an announcement about an announcement lmao

  • Jay

This is actually good news for me. I never liked Moogles speaking in human tongue. I prefer just a simple “Kupo”.

  • SpermPellets

    Just gimme moogles plz.

  • MetalRizeAwesomeOnmipenismon

How others see this game: “Oh it’s the death of Final Fantasy”
How I see this game: “Look at the f**king technology!!”

I’ve become less of a gamer and more of a wanna be game dev :(

    • Zackasaur

If you’re that interested in game development, you could always decide to experiment with it and potentially turn it into a career. c:

This isn’t the first time I’ve told someone that, and a few of those people are actually working on games, today.

      • MetalRizeAwesomeOnmipenismon

        Yeah
Im going to college for 3D modeling and Animation lol

        • Zackasaur

Oh, very cool! Let me know when you’re out there applying for work.

          • MetalRizeAwesomeOnmipenismon

            No problem lol

    • Noctis Pendragon

Yeah FF XV is a real tech showcase , i can’t stop reading thier papers or interviews (and other games like Quantum Break and UC4 ).

  • Etherblaze

    Okay, I guess… kupo.

  • Yuntu

I love the discussions in here, while I understand what people mean with Tabata talking about stuff – this seems like a mere easteregg or nod to older FF, its not like a whole segment of the game is revolving around Mogrys and they just now decided to put it in. Like come on you can’t be real when you type such statements.

  • Hayate Omega ZX

Make it like the Moogles in VI. God I loved those guys-kupo.

  • Will

Final Fantasy tactic Advance Moogles are my favorite. This guy reminds me of Mr Magoo.xD

  • Elvick

Make it a summon or something. That’d be neat.

  • V-Angelus

this kinda makes me sad. i like talking to moogles. kupo! :(

  • NotCarolKaye

Mog was so cute in XIII-2.

  • highsky00

It’ll be sweat if they are going to put Moogles in a funny Easter Egg .

  • vishmarx

    i f**** hate talking moogles.

    • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

They’d be better if they drop the wise cracking kawaii animal thing. Just make them talk like any other character. Make them say kup onlt once a paragraph. And make them fight.

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

I hate the goofy looking trash like the one up there.

  • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

I once had an idea that a major bad boss in a game could be a dead serious moogle who hid behind illusions that made him look like a giant berzerker do he could command respect from his minions. And only after losing would he be revealed to.be just a moogle. Maybe a Napoleon complex or a thirst for power enough to become a demon.
Thats how you make a moogle cool.

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Sounds like a screwy wizard of Oz.

      • https://www.behance.net/cobaltcomet KOKAYI5

Exactly. Anyone can be bad even moogles.

  • Warboss Aohd

can they be like the ones from FF6?

    Cause they were cool.

  • Nu Hades

    thank the lord
after FFXIV i have a burning hatred for Moogles

    DAMN YOU KING MOOGLE MOG

  • badmoogle

    Good.

    • Zackasaur

      “Good,” says the Bad Moogle.

      Should I be scared?

      • badmoogle

        Yes.Very. :p
