Wanted: Lateral Thinking – Organizing Skills – Creative Minds 

According to our definition of film and television producing, upon which this program’s curriculum is built, film and television producers are symbioses of artistic and creative competences with organizational and commercial abilities. 

We focus on the producer’s role as film artist working for and with other artists – screenwriters and directors, cinematographers and editors, soundtrack composers and many others – on a shared vision. The producer as engine, partner, source of inspiration, decision maker and organizer of a common passion. The producer as bearer of financial and personal responsibility – thus very interested in the (economic) success of their product.

With this in mind, theoretical classes and practical activities echo the current professional requirements predominant in the German and international film and television industry. Our goal is clear: to qualify our students for a good start to their professional careers.

In our seminars and lectures we focus on both creative and technical-organizational skills with classes on dramaturgy, directing, cinematography/image composition and project development as well as on script assessment, shooting schedule design, costing and financing during preproduction, shooting, postproduction and marketing. Media and labor law are also covered, as are interpersonal aspects such as project pitching and management and leadership skills. This holistic training is intensified and amplified by guided visits to film and television festivals, fairs and exhibitions as well as special interdisciplinary workshops.

Lectures and seminars are held by renowned industry experts. This guarantees that students are always well-informed about the current state of the art, while at the same time presented with the opportunity to establish contacts to the industry while still studying.

An essential part of our program focuses on practical experience. As production managers and creative producers, our students along with their fellow students at the Screenwriting, Image Composition/Cinematography, Directing, Cinematic Experimentation, Animation, Interactive Media, Montage/Editing, the Film Music and Sound Design departments are responsible for their own films of different formats and genres (fiction film, advertising film, education and science film, series formats, documentary film, animation and digital image composition). 

The Production program at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg currently offers students in their third of fourth academic years (following a two-year period of basic studies) a specialization in the fields of Creative Producing, International Producing, or Series Producing.

With the start of the academic year 2010/11, the Filmakademie broadened its curriculum to include specializations in the fields of Animation/Effects Producing, Transmedia/Games Producting and Advertising Film Producing. In order to specialize in one of these fields, students have to complete two years of basic studies in the Production study course, where they officially remain during the following two years of project studies. Teaching and mentoring, however, are then provided by the corresponding department of Animation, Interactive Media or Advertising Film. 
Students with a Bachelor’s degree or pre-diploma of another film school or art college, an equivalent degree or several years of working experience in the media industry may enter directly into the two-year project program.

After completing their studies, graduates can also apply for the one-year postgraduate program of the Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris master class.

Apart from imparting expert knowledge, we want to grant our students the freedom they need to find and develop their personal style. Without knowing what genre and what kind of stories one would preferably produce, without knowing one´s likings, strengths and weaknesses, without knowing what characterizes one´s own creativity and style, the training is not complete. Thus, discovering and boosting the student’s individual "producer personality" is the primary goal of this program.
